Facility information

There are few mountains as historically fascinating, pleasingly gothic in aesthetics or twistingly complicated in nature as Great Gable. And there are few that harbour so many interesting nooks and famous diversions. Entire books have been written about Gable, and it adorns the labels of beers and the logo of the Lake District National Park Authority – in which it is accurately portrayed dominating the vista along Wast Water. It is a mountain whose greatest interest is to be found high on its flanks rather than its top – from Sphinx rock, the eerie maze of the Great Napes and the legendary Napes Needle, the Great Gully and the murky footprints of bootlegger Lanty Slee, whose derelict hut lies deep within the many folds of the mountain.

Best route: the ultimate has to be the Climbers’ Traverse from Seathwaite (NY235122)

I first climbed this mountain in June of 2009 and it was when Britain was experiencing the heat wave at the time, to a degree we were lucky in the sense that it was clear blue sky all day long and we also managed to get Scafell pike in on the same day so not bad going, also from Scafell pike it was a summer evening and the sun setting behind Gable made the day extra special. The route taken to the summit was from Wasdale Head from which we ventured up to the Cliffs of the Great Napes were the rock scenery is amazing Sphinx Rock, Needle Gully, Napes Needle and Trophet Bastien being prominently impressive, after which we took the route to the summit up Great Hell Gate, Hell here being the right word to use as this was a very tough and challenging route to the summit but made all the more worth the effort to take in the glorious views at the top from Westmorelands Cairn looking over Wasdale. Also here do take some time to read the WW1 war memorial tablet at the summit and do remember those who gave their lives for us to enjoy this freedom we have out here, the top of Great Gable is sacred ground. From which that day this mountain remains my own personal favorite to climb and i find this mountain on its own a fascinating study, the scree of the hell gates is the toughest route up to the summit but well worth every drop of sweat when you get to the top, the next time i climb i will take the route from honister pass.....

Tackled from Wasdale end, bit of a scramble near the summit. Take a moment to read the history of the fell when you get up there. On a clear day you can see Scotland and the isle of man. Next time i'll do it from Green gable Via windy gap. All round great trek

I have always climbed this mountain from Honister slate mines and via Green Gable. Start early and tackle the Scafells as well if you have the energy. I would like to do this mountain from Wasdale head next time maybe.

Where to start? The Scafells may have the height, but Gable has the history. This has to be my favourite fell, if not mountain, certainly the one I've returned to the most. The Climber's Traverse is a particular favourite, especially on a summer's evening, when you could have the route to yourself. Best view: from Westmorland Cairn, SW of the summit memorial.
