I first climbed this mountain in June of 2009 and it was when Britain was experiencing the heat wave at the time, to a degree we were lucky in the sense that it was clear blue sky all day long and we also managed to get Scafell pike in on the same day so not bad going, also from Scafell pike it was a summer evening and the sun setting behind Gable made the day extra special.
The route taken to the summit was from Wasdale Head from which we ventured up to the Cliffs of the Great Napes were the rock scenery is amazing Sphinx Rock, Needle Gully, Napes Needle and Trophet Bastien being prominently impressive, after which we took the route to the summit up Great Hell Gate, Hell here being the right word to use as this was a very tough and challenging route to the summit but made all the more worth the effort to take in the glorious views at the top from Westmorelands Cairn looking over Wasdale. Also here do take some time to read the WW1 war memorial tablet at the summit and do remember those who gave their lives for us to enjoy this freedom we have out here, the top of Great Gable is sacred ground.
From which that day this mountain remains my own personal favorite to climb and i find this mountain on its own a fascinating study, the scree of the hell gates is the toughest route up to the summit but well worth every drop of sweat when you get to the top, the next time i climb i will take the route from honister pass.....
