Facility information

A ‘lazy Lakeland gent’ is how many would prefer to view Coniston Old Man, other than Wainwright who used the violent term ‘mutilated by quarries’ to describe it. Nevertheless, this is a magnificent hill, dominating the serene waters of the nearby Coniston Water at the head of a superb inverted-Y walk, which includes Swirl How and Dow Crag. Once in the shelter of the mountain’s bulk, the huge cliffs and teardrop lake of Goat’s Water provide a superlative wild camp.

Best route: the aforementioned walk, from Coniston.

Me and my family drove out of coniston and onto a car part at the foot of the old man. And took a old and unused route. We clambered up the side (not the tourist main track) and it was so pleasing to conquere the mountain by making your own route up. As alwasy the weather came down quick and we had to be carefull of slipping on the slate but, the views from the summit was worth it. A crystal clear day we could see far into the distance beyond coniston water. And the main toursit route down was a long slog, but a very enjoyeble day out.

I have very fond memories of sitting on top of the trig point watching the sun setting over the sea on February afternoon with my girlfriend. This was at the time the highest peak we had both climbed. We had tried a few days earlier but a white out had made us turn back, however this time conditions where perfect, if slightly cold. The views from up here are truely astounding, south past the windfarm out into Morcombe Bay, east across Coniston water, west into the setting sun over Dow crags, north over the rest of the lakes. We done this walk via Wetrherlam, Swirl how, Great Carrs, Grey Friar then up onto the old man. A challenging walk but well worthwhile. The walk back down in the dark was great fun and gave us the opportunity for some night time navigation. Two very happy walkers returned to our cottage all a glow. Scarred by quaries it maybe, but once on top take time to really enjoy the views.
