Facility information

So called due to its history of playing host to a Roman road from Penrith to Ambleside, this massive whaleback dominates the scenery of the Eastern Fells, and is home to hill forts and stone circles that attest as much.

Best route: though purists will want to trace its full course, by far the most dramatic approach is up Riggindale Crag, a beautifully linear ridge ascending from easily accessed Mardale Head (NY440110)

hello all first post so be gentle please!! me and the old hound parked up at mardale car-park(FREE PARKING IN THE LAKE DISTRICT WHAT'S THE WORLD COMING TOO?)and set off up gatescarth pass and over to harter fell, brilliant views over haweswater across the top of the rigde and luckily the wind was coming from the east as it literally blew me into the fence. We trampled on over the rigde of black john hole then to mardale ill bell too highstreet returning via kidsy pike. this route gave stunning views over most of the lake district and although no golden eagles where spotted I did see some interesting tadpoles. my old hound (bess) thoroughly enjoyed it but was disappointed with the lack of sandwiches as there are no real cairns for people to picnic at.I have also walked highsteet from hartsop via the knott and backdown via the beacon, but would recommend the harter hill route however hound prefers the hartsop route as a kindly gent gave her some cheese sandwich at the beacon both routes are not overtaxing but make a good day out on the fells

A good no-car option. Start at Windermeer bus/train station. Over Orrest Head, follow Longmire Road trackway, up Park fell to Thornthwaite Crag and join High Street. descend via The Knott and Angle tarn to Patterdale. Bus back to Windermere (summertime only). A cracking day out!
