Facility information

Claire Maxted on the prickled marvels of Tryfan:
"My mind is blank. I’m wobbling on one leg at on a chunk of granite higher than a 6ft bloke and as wide as a bath mat. This just-about-climbable pillar is affectionately known as Adam, and one over-sized leg stretch away stands its partner, Eve. At 915m on the summit of Tryfan, the drop between them makes my stomach lurch. One calf muscle twinge later I’m flying through the air towards Eve. On a clear day you can see these twin pinnacles, and their famous gap, from Llyn Ogwen below. And if you squint, Tryfan’s jagged outline does a very good impression of a side-on shot of Queen Victoria’s face. Frozen, Medusa-like at the end of the Glyders, the hard granite slabs jut out in all the right places to create the perfect replica of the old monarch’s profile. This is what shoves Tryfan well and truly into this list: there’s a heart-racing scramble to the top no matter which side you start your walk. Paths come and go up the popular north ridge – and I defy anyone to scramble it the same way twice, thrice, or ever again. You can climb Tryfan 100 times over and it’s different every time."
Best route: via the superb north ridge.

I seriously cant believe that it's been there all this time and I'd never done it before; never really been tempted, until my bro in law and I decided to attempt to do Trails '17 mountains every walker must climb (Spring 2010 issue). I'm from Snowdonia so this is even more embarassing!! Me, the wife and a friend took on Tryfan on Easter Sunday. I will admit to being a little apprehensive about doing it, nevermind the north ridge. Needless to say we all found it the most exhilirating and amazing mountain experience we've ever had. It's a big old lump of rock, but it's hugely challenging and offers so much variety in terms of routes. I was super nervous about whether I had the minerals to do Cannon Stone and Adam and Eve, but my wife led the way so how could I not do them? It also proved to be one of most sociable mountains I've ever been on - so many people in great spirits and keen to chat along and share experiences. I guess we're all in it together. Thanks to Liam from South London for showing us the way. I was nervous for no reason - and you know what, people saying that Cnicht is a great confidence builder, couldnt be more spot on. It prepared me no end for Tryfan, the best and most fulfilling mountain I've ever been on. I doubt any will top it, and I've done Crib Goch!!!

Its an awesome mountain with numerous scrambles and climbs to choose from. Glorious views from the top. Not for the faint of heart or a novice in wet weather. Treat this one with respect.

This mountain has it all.......boring it is not. I have done this via the Heather terrace and the North face and both days were unforgettable....If you have time and energy carry on over the Glyderau and experience it's moonscapelike summit plateaus. Brilliant!

This bank holiday weekend, got up at half five, away from the campsite by 6:15, lunch bought and packed, parked near the Idwal cottage by 7 and started walking. Went up the west face of Tryfan - been up before but thsi was the first time on my own. What a fantastic climb - some great scrambling onto the North Ridge and the summit. Massive sense of achievement on reaching the summit, what a windy day up there though! From there it was onto the Glyders. A cracking day and an absolutely cracking mountain. Love it. Phil

I love Tryfan, it's my absolute favourite mountain. If someone told me to choose just one mountain to visit for the rest of my life, then I wouldn't hesitate. So many different little twists and turns, so much to keep you occupied, it's got everything for me.

Coming over the hill on the miners track and seeing this huge chunk of rock for the first time, awe inspiring. My girlfriend and me stood there slakc jawed at such a beautiful mountain. I declared I've got to climb that. As we already had a route planned for that day I was back by myself the next day for a short(ish) fell run taking in Tryfans south face. We came back two days later to climb it together, unfortunately the weather got the better of us. I've since been back on many occasions and climbed Tryfan from the north face. I don't think I've ever gone up the same way twice. I'm planning a few scrambles from the heather terrace later this year. A cracking mountain that will have you coming back for more all the time.

One of the best mountain experiences you can get in this country. Along with the Snowdon Horeshoe, a scramble up the north ridge must be high up the list of any serious hill walkers's aspirations. Manageable by the majority of reasonably fit walkers, Tryfan gives feelings of exhiliration, and in places even fear. I enjoyed it so much, I'm leading a team up for the Trail 100 challenge.
