Facility information

Wales' highest peak is every bit as impressive as its accolade suggests. From the east, it's a massive triangle of rock draped with steep, thorny approaches that entertain right to the final steps. Evidence - as if any were needed - that a mountain with a train running up it is still very much a mountain.

Best Route: From Pen y Pass, via Crib Goch.

I've walked up Snowdon several times and whilst the popular Pyg/Miners route from Pen y Pass is very quick it is also regularly over crowded. I much prefer the quieter Ranger's Path from Llyn Cwellyn in Nant Gwyrfai or the Rhydd Ddu route. This is a much greener and prettier valley than the over crowded Nant Peris Which ever way you go up the views from the top are stunning on a clear day

Heavy Traffic at weekends over spring / summer on the Miners / Pyg track, but still a good day out. Beuatiful lakes and scenery. Like many have already said, its still a mountain regardless of the train and Cafe, so pack accordingly and dont get cought out.

For the true mountain lover, there is more satisfaction in Snowdon ascending via Rhyd Ddu or on the Watkins path maybe even bag Yr Aran on the way. These routes are harder and take in more ascent than the miners track but are worth it just to escape the crowds.

It's often described as easy, but this mountain can still be dangerous. I went up the Pyg track one icy day in early March with two 10 year olds. We reached a point by the zig-zags were it became just too trecherous to proceed. I'm not ashamed to say we turned back (as nearly everyone else without crampons did the same) and the kids learnt a valuable lessson - sometimes you have to call it a day - the mountain isn't going anywhere and you can always come back.

Snowdon provides an excellent rodge walk as well as gettign over 3000ft but the summit is poor on views especially when you area accompanied by 200 other railway enthusiasts!!

It's all too easy to deride tourist peaks like Snowdon. Yes, it has a railway - but so does the Eiger, right? Yes, it has a cafe and too many punters braving the summit in jeans and white trainers, regardless of the (often horrible) weather. This is missing the point, though, for Snowdon is a mountain - well, a whole massif if we're being pedantic - that truly deserves its fame. Here is a peak that genuinely offers something for everyone: one of the most celebrated ridge scrambles and horseshoe routes in Britain; a wide range of walking approaches; and spectacular views from almost every angle. Just choose a quiet day if possible.

This is a fantastic mountain, and the best thing about it is anybody in the world can get to top of it to enjoy the views, if capable you can walk/climb to the top. If not able to walk/climb it then you can catch the train and sit back and relax as it takes you all but 60 feet from the top.

Its the best way to do Snowdon if you are a bit technically minded and like a scramble. Up via Crib Goch and the amazing arete, across the Pinnacles, and on to Garnedd Ugain, in my opinion the scramble here is the best part of the day. Across the broad ridge and on to Yr Wyddfa, and the throngs of day trippers, unless you get up REALLY early!! A tough drop down to the Watkin path down scree paths (poles recommended here) and then on over Y Lliwedd, another fantastic scramble. Enjoy the views over Llydaw, and then back to the car and off for a well earned beer. Do it, you'll be glad you did!!

Walked this earlier this year, coming from Rhyd Ddu. Great walk in past the slate workings, but weather got worse as time passed. Wind was high and rain horizontal by the time we got to the top. Joined on the cairn by a 6yo who came with his parents from Llanberis! Fantastic!
