Lets be honest - its a bit of a slog up Pen Yr Ole Wen from the A5 by Llyn Ogwen, and its not the most exciting ascent you'll ever do. Thats the negative stuff out of the way. Now on to the positives. The views of Tryfan and the rest of the Glyders are breathtaking throughout nearly the whole ascent. What an excuse for the regular rest stops you will not doubt want! There is a compulsory scramble about two thirds of the way up but there are multiple routes which range from a simple grade 1 up to a difficult grade 2. The top is a plateau which offers wonderful views across the Glyder and Snowdon ranges to the south and Conwy Bay to the north. Don't just stop at PYOW though - a good path runs east from the summit to Carnedd Dafydd and then further to Carnedd Llewelyn (second highest point in Wales) and a side trip to Yr Elen if there is anything left in the legs. The ridiculous thing is that PYOW offers some of the best views you will ever see and provides a gateway to the rest of the Carneddau range, yet you will hardly see another soul all day (unless you take your binoculars and watch people queuing like ants up Tryfan's north ridge).
