Facility information

The ‘chair’ of ancient giant Idris, Cadair is another mountain steeped in mythology. Legend says anyone who spends a night on its summit will descend either a poet or a madman – or will die atop the mountain. The Cadair Idris massif is home to one of the best scrambles south of Scotland – the Cyfrwy Arête – as well as the magnificent horseshoe of Craig Cwm Amarch, highest point Pen y Gadair – and the creepiest little summit shelter in Wales.

Best route: The most dramatic approach is from the north, giving fine aspects on the Cyfrwy Arête and the steep northern cliffs.

Went up Cadair Idris on a wild winter's day,via the Minffordd Path. The snow covered vista from Cwm Cau,when finally in view was truly magical, the ascent of Craig y Cau challenging, but breathtakingly rewarding, with fantastic views over to Penycadair and Mynydd Moel.Being my first 'winter' mountain, the final pull up to Penycadair is 'interesting' to say the least!!!!.and the summit 'bothy' is a welcome shelter when the winds start whistling!! The wide plateau over to Mynydd Moel is a welcome respite, and gives another different viewpoint over to Craig Cau and the Cyfryw ridge. Those intending to descend from Mynydd Moel to rejoin the Minffordd path,be prepared for the VERY steep path that drops down at an alarming rate, and assistance from the nearby fence may be required,or a new ski-lift!!!!lol!! As a winter walk,I cannot recommend this route enough,a true Welsh mountain classic!

Cracking mountain, and it offers you the chance to be a poet or a madman. How many other hills can do that for you.

First big mountain since I started doing this walking malarky properly. A nice big cairn, nice hut to get out the wind, and usually lots of company. A good mountain day.

I dont agree with trails best route, i would say from the south and taking in the lake the direct up the screes to the summit. One way to make this even mote fun is a night on the top, waking up to the best views in wales. Fantastic!
