Facility information

A truly great mountain of north Wales’ heartland is this most southerly of the Carneddau, fittingly nicknamed the Podium of Snowdonia. Its climax is an elegant rock promontory that stretches towards the summit rocks and gives a revelatory view of Snowdon and its horseshoe.
Best route: via its cracking little south-east ridge – an easy Grade 1 scramble.

This is probably my favourite mountain in Wales and England. It was my first mountain in full winter conditions the year I started mountaineering and I must have been up it in every weather condition possible. The scramble on the Ddear Ddu Ridge is a brilliant introduction to scrambling as the scramble can be as exposed or tame as you like. Its quite a compact mountain, provides superb views of the whole of snowdonia, north and south. Has a few good variations of routes and some good wild camping spots. And you get to walk past some mine workings and lakes which adds interest.

I'm a big fan of this mountain, an ascent of the south side of the mountain gives airy views of the moelwyns, industrial archaeology, a nice if boggy lakeside walk, and the highlight of the ascent, the Ddear Ddu ridges offers an introduction to scrambling, and great practice for the tougher scrambles on neighbouring hills. The summit also gives just about the best views of the Snowdon horseshoe going. And you can do the entire walk in just an afternoon, meaning easy highs for relatively little effort.

Accessible, unthreatening and the most spectacular vantage point in Snowdonia. Best climbed on a crisp winter's day when the snow-capped Lakeland Fells are often visible on the northeastern horizon.
