Facility information

Instantly recognisable and temptingly steep, Sugar Loaf is a modest yet charismatic mountain. Free-standing, it somehow pulls off looking totally different yet completely at home in the rolling south Wales scenery in which it sits.

Best route: north from the car park at SO268167

We took our 8 and 6 year old girls here for a family walk and picnic. We took the traditional route from the car park and we all loved it. A perfect mixture of woods, fields and open grassland before you get to the bottom of the hill. Then a brief but steep climb to the summit and wonderful views all around. Perfect place to spend a few hours and suitable for young children while still feeling like an energetic hike for grown-ups. Will definitely return.

A mountain with everything if you want a stunning experience and home for breakfast. I agree the narrow side is best, go early on a clear morning with frost on the ground or in the heat of summer go even earlier, it's perfect!

Great hill with many route choices. Ideal for the family with great views into the Brecon's, Black's and across to Ysgyrd Fawr.

This is a cracking hill, but north from the car park is not the way to go. Ascend from the western ridge over Mynydd Pen-y-Fal. From this direction, you'll see the peak narrow side on, bristling with craggy rocks at the top. It looks amazing. Park in Llangenny and follow the river, then cross country to the mountain. Leave the carpark for the tourists!

This is a cracking mountain to walk if your in the area and short of time. My first asscent started off in complete whiteness, by the time we had reached the summit we were in shorts and t-shirts and were enjoying the most amazing cloud inversion. Looking slightly north east you could see the Malverns rising up out of the cloud. A RAF fighter passed overhead and flipped upside down, he was so close he waved to us. I've been up many times since in all weather conditions and from different directions and I find it always holds a new suprise each time. It also looks like a proper mountain, no easy rolling sides. Having said that its still a fairly easy one to climb.
