Facility information

Isolated from the Brecon Beacons and rising from the seemingly limitness bogs of the Black Mountain, Bannau Sir Gaer’s raked ridgeline and the lake nestled in its eastern cwm is a fine example of wild south Wales.
It’s an elegant wedge, corduroyed with sandstone terraces and green moleskin vegetation.

Best route: link it with fine neighbouring wedges Bannau Sir Gaer and Fan Foel from the lonely pull-in at SN825218.

Take the route from Llanddeusant trout hatchery, this will take you east round Llyn y fan fach, and up onto the Bannau Sir Gaer ridge(677m).The views from here are are fantastic.Follow the ridge to Picws Du(749m),then Fan Foel(781m) and onto Fan Brycheiniog. From here, you can see the whole of the Beacons range to the east.Either, follow the steep path down to Llyn y fan fawr, and retrace your steps to your starting point,or carry on east along Fan Hir,one of the best ridges in wales! this will join the Beacons way at Glyntawe carpark.A truly fab walk.

Part of the Carmarthen Fans west of the Brecon Beacons. This mountain and the respective ridge walks that lead to it are truly the best in the Brecon Beacons national park. Dont miss it and get yourself there!

I walked the trail magazine route. This was a great route testing navigational skills and stamina. As it was a warm cloudless day the the views were fantastic. But take a windproof as despite weather, wind was blowing on top.

Definatley one for those who like to have the hills mostly to themselves. We set out at 10:00 on a fine Saturday morning in June - Didn't see another soul for nearly 2 hours and only a handful after that. Be warned though, because this is not a touristy hill, defined tracks can be hard to find (and practically non-existant in places)apart from on the ridge itself. In the fog, navigation could be really tricky. Still the views are superb and the terrain fantastic. Also, on the walk in, we startled a buzzard sat on a rock in a gully. Couldn't have been more than 10ft away - I've never seen one that close in the wild before - Amazing!

One on the best ridge walks in south wales, set in a Fantasic geological area of south wales. I like to walk along the bottom of the ridge to llyn y fan Fawr then up onto Fan Brycheiniog then down the gully at bwlch blean twrch then follow the path to llyn y fan fach and back up onto the ridge onto picws du, back over to Fan Brycheiniog and back along the top of the ridge to the car. cracking day out.

One of my favourite hills, can view it from home and I thinks its one of the best escarpment walks that can be done in winter conditions. Been up and down the gullies as well which is awsome.
