Grivel Munro

£40.00

This ice axe has been Trail’s favourite ice axe for the last couple of years and it continues to set the pace on the slopes this winter. It wins as it would be very difficult to equip an ice axe any better for the typical British winter walker. You get the basic set of features that all winter walkers need including a good range of sizes. Grab the axe and the tool feels well-balanced in the hands. You get a leash that has a spike protector pre-attached and this will no doubt save the coverings of many car seats! The shaft is a straight design and the head offers a gentle curve to make it ideal for walking in snow. The head has a reasonably wide adze for chopping steps and a good spike for ice axe braking. There is no grip on the shaft to hamper vertical placements . At 482g for the 60cm version this is light, even when allowing for the difference in lengths supplied here. Better still the price of just £40 makes this exceptionally good value for money. In these days of mixed winter conditions when you may actually end up carrying your ice axe all winter in the hope of finding a snow slope, all these features combine to make this a winner for the average winter hill-walker.  But while the Munro is very good it could be even better. You don’t get a rubber grip on the shaft for example, which can be helpful if you are going to be swinging the axe for cutting steps regularly. The leash is a rather basic design, so regular users may prefer an alternative. Some axes have a precurved shaft for easier placement in snow slopes, while others are rated as technical so that they can be used for roped belays. But if you want an excellent basic axe for general walking these drawbacks should not put you off.

Verdict: Buy it if you are heading for the British hills this winter as it is well-priced and does most things really well, though others are better for more regular users or those heading for more difficult terrain.

I have never owned an ice axe before - the only ones I have used in the past were borrowed ones in school expeditions and an awful one when attempting to clamber up the Franz Josef glacier in hobnail boots one one of those tourist trips. I have had my Munro for a year or so - my inlaws gave me a funny look when I asked for it for last Christmas. It was finally used in anger at the beginning of November in a very snow bound trip on the Carneddau. I took it to lash my dogs lead to when lunching, but ended up using it for "third leg" stability on very slippy snow slopes and ice bound ridges. The axe feels great in the hand being well balanced and light, and the adze cuts steps in snow with ease. The only problem with it is its is lacking a rubber grip, and the leash could do with an adjuster.

I had managed for years with my old 60's Stubai axe in the UK, but over the last five years I've been going out to the Pyrenees and with the greater height gains, I felt that a lighter axe would be useful. I read the trail reviews and bought the Munro axe. It has been as good as the review and has been on top of quite a few 3000M peaks. I've found it an excellent tool so far and don't hesitate to recommend it. cheers Johnnie

I had this axe for a xmas pressie, I've used it a couple of times for winter walks up and around Pen y Fan and the Beacons, Excellent axe for general walking and saved me from being blown off the Cefn Cwm Llwch ridge in very strong wind just below the summit. The axe is strong, easy to carry and is cheap (£40).

Used mine several times in December. Nice, light and gave me good support going uphill. I like the extra confidence and peace of mind underfoot in very icy conditions. I know there are more fancy looking axes out there but, for the price, I can't knock it.
