The Camp Névé is a simple, stripped-down walking axe. The functional adze and pick are well-shaped for chopping steps, daggering and even a bit of front pointing. The pick has a particularly fine profile with a good selection of teeth that will penetrate snow and ice well. The shaft although lacking a rubber grip does have a roughened surface and a workable slider leash. For such a light axe the balance, while not as good as some of the others, does make swinging it easy. The ferrule and shaft are sandwiched by a plastic insert, which gives a smoother profile and aids plunging into snow. It lacks some of the oomph of other axes, and it would benefit from a rubber grip, but overall the Camp Névé is ideal if you need a lightweight basic axe for walking and only occasional ventures onto the steeper stuff. It’s well up to tackling snowy ascents in Snowdonia and the Lakes, and winter Munro-bashing in the Scottish winter.
