This winter jacket is made from eVent fabric, so breathability and waterproofness are as good as it gets. Better still, the fabric feels a little stiffer than some, so it should be more able to trap warm air around the body in a howling winter storm.  The hood can be rolled down and secured, and when worn it benefits from a wired peak, volume adjustment and exceptional fit and movement with the head. Movement in the sleeves is excellent too. You get four chest pockets that can all be easily accessed, and they are all huge. Very long pit zips vent the sides and underarm areas so you don’t have to take the jacket off so often. This has a lot of great features for hill-walkers and winter mountain action.
But other jackets are lighter and longer than this, so for pure walking others are probably better. None of the zips has stormflaps, so even with their water-resistant zips, the jackets with external stormflaps may keep more driving rain out.

Outer 3-layer eVent
Inner none
Fabric waterproofness extremely waterproof
Fabric breathability extremely breathable
Sizes S-XL
Weight 648g (size L)
Made in Far East
Stores in UK 18

Verdict: Ideal if you want a robust mountaineering jacket with great pockets and a great hood, and prefer shorter designs. This won Best Value in our test.

I've used my Latok Alpine now for about 12 months and I can't find fault with it. I really struggled to find a jacket with really good fit so perhaps it won't suit everyone - quite close fitting body, long arms - but it it does fit you its superb. I find the E-vent fabric extremely breathable and I'm much more comfortable in it than I ever was in my previous Gore-tex offerings. Only things I would suggest in any redesign would be a 2-way main zip and slightly bigger front pockets so that my map fits a bit easier, oh and better range of colours! Will definitely buy another when this one wears out :)

Love this jacket, the cut is excellent and as I run hot, it's a lot more breathable for my money than Gore.

The Latok is indeed a fine winter jacket, the redesign has sorted out that dodgy seam under the hood drawcord that can leak. But the photo above is a three year old Latok Alpine. Here you go http://www.rab.uk.com/products_waterproof_latokj.html
