The Mountain Equipment Pro Lite is a new jacket that looks set to become very popular as it has a great set of features and makes use of the latest Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric, so it has excellent water and condensation control. The jacket is a simple design with a main front zip that benefits from an external stormflap. There are two large chest pockets that are sealed rather than mesh-lined, and also these can be easily accessed while wearing a rucksack. The hood can be rolled down and has a stiffened peak to protect the eyes in wet and windy weather. Fit and movement of the hood are superb. Use this for lightweight backpacking, general hill-walking and Alpine trips, and it should be ideal. For what you get the price is great too. But the Mountain Equipment Pro Lite is a little too short for me when walking and others are indeed a couple of centimetres longer, which makes a difference. Others jackets are available with a third chest pocket too, which is useful for a map and compass. Other jackets are lighter if weight is your priority, while some are lower in price if you are short on cash.

Verdict
The Mountain Equipment Pro Lite is an excellent jacket for hill-walkers and backpackers, but it is a little shorter than some of its competitors.

I bought this and the seemingly more popular Morpheus jacket recently as I couldn't choose between the two. I liked the sound of the lighter weight of the Pro Lite but wanted the OS Map pocket of the Morpheus. When the two jackets arrived, I discovered that the Pro Lite has an internal long pocket plus an elasticated mobile phone pocket, which didn't get mentioned once in any review that I'd read! This is a great feature. The jacket really is very light too to say the quality is so good. It isn't pac-a-mac quality at all, it feels like a 'proper' waterproof and I wear it on a day to day basis as well as for hiking. This isn't a review of the Morpheus, but I will just say that the external OS map pocket on it DOESN'T actually fit a map in it, so its only selling point for me over the pro lite was irrelevant. Therefore, in my opinion, this is a much better jacket since it has the same features, is the same material, is lighter, has better pockets and still has the storm hood, PLUS its cheaper too!
