The Mountain Equipment Morpheus jacket is made from three-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell Ascendor fabric, which is just about the most breathable waterproof material I've used -- certainly appreciably better than either standard Gore-Tex or Paclite. It seems to be very tough, showing no signs of wear after about a year's use for day walks, scrambles and backpacking trips. It's also surprisingly light, weighing only 100g or so more than a Paclite jacket I have, yet giving much better protection. I still take the Paclite shell when it probably won't rain, just to save weight and a bit of packed bulk, but otherwise the Morpheus is now my automatic choice.
The design lives up to the fabric, being simple but functional. The hood fits well and moves with my head, the main zip has a good storm flap, the jacket is a reasonable length, giving a good overlap with standard overtrousers, and the cut means I can layer underneath it, without there being any excessively baggy bits. It doesn't ride up excessively when I reach overhead during scrambles. I also like the easily accessible pockets, which are positioned quite high so they aren't obstructed by rucksack straps.
Some might worry about the pocket zips letting water in during heavy rain, but I haven't found this to be a problem. There are no pit zips, but then again I've never been keen on these — they're a potential weak point, add weight and cost, and always seem a bit fiddly to use.
The price of £200 is pretty high, but then again it's a quality jacket that looks set to last well, and you can often pick them up for a lot less.
