Mountain Equipment Morpheus/Seraph

£200.00

LFTO rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

With this lightweight waterproof you get classic Mountain Equipment features like large chest pockets and a great hood with a stiff peak that moves really well with the head. But it is perhaps the use of Gore-Tex Pro Shell that gives this jacket the edge over previous designs, as it allows a very lightweight fabric to control condensation really well compared to Gore-Paclite for example. Better still you get a stormflap over that front zip to keep rain out. None of the pockets is mesh either, so again that helps keep the rain out. The body cups the bottom nicely, while the cut allows excellent freedom of movement in the sleeves. The hood is one of the best around, with a particular good peak. Very hard to improve on. But there are lighter jackets around, and other hoods might fit your head a little better – but that will depend on your head shape! The sleeves are cut quite loosely compared to some too. Some might find the lack of a hanging loop in the collar annoying.

I've had my Morpheus for almost a year now, and can't fault it. While it's extremely light and packs up small, it provides all the protection I need. It has been well designed and made, and all in all, about the best outdoor jacket I have ever had. It looks as though it's going to give many more years of service, too, with no signs of wear evident. Not cheap, but well worth the extra cash.

The Mountain Equipment Morpheus jacket is made from three-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell Ascendor fabric, which is just about the most breathable waterproof material I've used -- certainly appreciably better than either standard Gore-Tex or Paclite. It seems to be very tough, showing no signs of wear after about a year's use for day walks, scrambles and backpacking trips. It's also surprisingly light, weighing only 100g or so more than a Paclite jacket I have, yet giving much better protection. I still take the Paclite shell when it probably won't rain, just to save weight and a bit of packed bulk, but otherwise the Morpheus is now my automatic choice. The design lives up to the fabric, being simple but functional. The hood fits well and moves with my head, the main zip has a good storm flap, the jacket is a reasonable length, giving a good overlap with standard overtrousers, and the cut means I can layer underneath it, without there being any excessively baggy bits. It doesn't ride up excessively when I reach overhead during scrambles. I also like the easily accessible pockets, which are positioned quite high so they aren't obstructed by rucksack straps. Some might worry about the pocket zips letting water in during heavy rain, but I haven't found this to be a problem. There are no pit zips, but then again I've never been keen on these — they're a potential weak point, add weight and cost, and always seem a bit fiddly to use. The price of £200 is pretty high, but then again it's a quality jacket that looks set to last well, and you can often pick them up for a lot less.

I have had the Seraph for about six months now and have been very impressed with it. The fabric tough and breathable. It is the idea length for me - goes over my bum but does not restrict movement and it feels like a quality bit of kit. Just remember to push the zips inside their little houses or the pockets leak. Trail are quite right - the lack of a hanging loop is very, very annoying.
