The Montane Superfly is an extremely popular multi-activity jacket. It is made from eVent fabric, which is now well-proven for waterproofness and breathability. Some seams are bonded rather than stitched to reduce weight and bulk. There are three large chest pockets that can be easily accessed while wearing a rucksack. You also get strips of reflective material for night action and a longer-than-average body, plus a scooped tail for protection when biking. The cuffs and hem don’t ride up when scrambling either. The hood is a superb fit and benefits from a wired peak as well as the ability to be rolled down and secured at the collar, which is useful when biking. The fabric feels more durable than lighter jackets, making it better than some for mountaineers and scramblers. But other jackets are a notch lighter if you are counting every gram, so the Montane Superfly is not the best if you want to travel ultralight or go running, for that reason. For faster multi-activity use the shorter jackets have advantages as they are a little less intrusive.

Verdict
The Montane Superfly is a modern classic jacket that is superb for bikers, walkers, scramblers and mountaineers who are not counting every gram.

As a mountain rescue volunteer for the Central Beacons MRT in the Brecon Beacons I need reliable, durable and comfortable kit. I purchased the Montane Superfly a week ago after debating the purchase for two months. The first outing was on MRT training with an RAF Sea King crew. The jacket (and come to think of it me!) was put through it's paces: with winching - the weight and the pressures of the winch did not let the jacket ride up high or loose shape. hard walking - through the various 'yomps' to RV points the jacket kept me moisture free, 70 to 80 mph winds - the storm flaps on the jacket did a remarkable job but needed to keep the zip fully fastened to stop being whipped in the face, sleet and snow - good insulation and excellent dryness even when hanging around at RV points waiting for further instructions. After eight hours I took the jacket off to find myself warm and dry, and not cold, sweaty and clammy that I am used to after removing my old jacket (will not mention the make - bit embarrassing). Only downside is that the side pockets seem to be a bit high or it could be that I have long arms! In summary this is the best jacket I have used and it even looks good when you go to the shops!
