Montane Superfly

This lightweight waterproof has a huge following thanks to the use of eVent fabric and great design. For 2007 it got a nip and tuck to improve its performance yet more. A scattering of bonded rather than stitched seams are evident to reduce bulk, while the shoulders are reinforced with a very unusual printed pattern. The most important update is probably the hood though, which now has a better peak that does not flip up in the breeze as it did previously. You still get three large chest pockets, patches of reflective material and an average length on the body. Cuffs and hem don’t ride up when scrambling either. It was a great jacket, and now it is even better. But other jackets are a notch lighter if you are counting every gram. The hood is better than it was, but it’s still not quite as good as the best hoods as it doesn’t quite hug my head perfectly – although this may depend on head shape of course!

Outer: eVent
Inner: none
Fabric waterproofness: extremely waterproof
Fabric breathability: extremely breathable
Sizes: XS-XXL (men’s); 8-18 (women’s)
Weight: 490g (large)
Made in China
Stores in UK: 105

Verdict: A modern classic lightweight jacket that is now even better than last year.

Re: Montane Superfly

Recently got a Superfly XT - don't like the wrist velcro - poor design, everything else is good.

I rather like the hood but it does take some getting used to - seriously good foul weather coat.

Superfly

I bought last seasons Supefly XT (after ptc and moggy recommended it - thanks guys) direct from Montane for about £120 I think.

Great waterproof that has served me well and not let me down yet.

I love the pocket sizes and placement and the fact it's long enough to cover my backside.

Personally I'm not too fussed about the hood as I never get on with jacket hoods and prefer a seperate w/p hat.

Having said that, my only gripe is that the hood rolls up like so many jackets.

I much prefer it when you can either stow the hood away in the collar or completely detach it.

very good jacket

I bought one of these to replace a faulty ME firefly.  Its a very good jacket, fits me personally very well, pockets are well placed for access, I used it on a couple of very wet days and stayed nicely dry, it certainly performed well in terms of breathability.  It is light and packs down well making it a very good jacket to shove into a rucksack and forget about.  My only problem with it is that the hood doesn't fit quite as nicely as I'd like, but this isn't a major problem.

Photograph

It is indeed a much improved Superfly this season, but the photograph you can see is of the winter 05/06 version. You'll see the right one here http://www.montane.co.uk/productdetails.php?productid=135&rid=11
