We renewed all our children's waterproof jackets about 14 months ago with the Keela Simpson Jackets and included the inner fleece that attaches to it. Previous waterproofs had been ok but we wanted jackets the kids could use both for hiking and for everyday. After 14 months of pretty constant use the jackets have been excellent in terms of performance, value, look, robustness and comfort (the adjustable hoods especially have all been brilliant fits, working very well in some very windy and rainy conditions - in other children's waterproofs we had used this always seemed a major design flaw)- we have bought and used the Simpson from Keela for children aged 3, 6 and 8 and when the inevitable happens and we need to replace we will look to the Keela children's jackets again. The only problem we had was trying to buy them i.e. finding a stockist and then when you find one they had a limited range of stock and colours of kid's stuff. That being said the Keela website lists stockists (which seems to have expanded a lot since we tried to get hold of them 14 months ago) and it appears you can now buy online direct from Keela. So if you want a jacket for the kids for walking and are willing to pay £33 (cheaper than many competitor products and school jackets) then this is the one - get your monies worth and double up as the school coat and for everyday use; it is robust enough (we have used Nikwax cleaner and re-waterproofer to refresh).
The fleece inner is good especially if using for school or everyday coat on cold days as an instant warm layer without too much thinking- on longer walks we tend to take it out to save weight, or the kids take it out of the coat tend to wear as their walking fleece (costs about £15 for the attachable fleece). I would buy again because of the options it gives you.
If you are also looking for children's waterproof dungarees and want value and something that works well then Lidl every now and again stock an excellent and usually colourful product at about £4-£5 per pair - the kids have used for walking, playing and even wet rugby practice and have been kept dry (they also work well as a wind-proof layer).
