Berghaus Deluge Overtrouser

£40.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

These are definitely the best waterproof overtrousers for £40 that we tested. In particular they get a long leg zip, making them very easy to fit over boots. That zip also has a double stormflap with press studs, so it will keep out far more water than an exposed water-resistant zip for example. An even nicer addition is the ability to vent the side zip from the top, for when you overheat but don’t want to remove your overtrousers. For extra comfort there is a lining too, while the elasticated waist and drawcord are standard for this price, and effective. A superb price for what you are getting. But you do not get a stuffsack or pockets. Perhaps more importantly you cannot adjust the ankle cuff to prevent it from flapping about. Some are lighter too, of course, while others have additional features, such as articulated knees. But for the price these drawbacks are acceptable.

Outer fabric: Aquafoil
Inner fabric: polymide
Sizes: S-XXL (men’s); 8-18 (women’s)
Weight: 418g (size men’s L)
Made in: Thailand
Stores in the UK: no info provided

Verdict: If £40 is your budget, these should be top of your wish list.

For the £29.99 i paid for these i'm well pleased, been out in some really bad weather and they haven't let me down once. I've never owned expensive over trousers and whilst these are available i never will, top piece of kit. 5 outta 5.

Berghaus is a name you can trust. Paid £29 for mine and they do exactly what they claim to do, no more and no less.

If you are after a pair of full on waterproof overtrousers with all the bells and whistles for winter walking, then look elsewhere, but if all you need are a pair of solidly made, generally waterproof trousers for occasional use, then these could be the best £40 you could spend. They come with a 3/4 length zip up both legs which makes them easy to put on quickly. They are only an 'aquafoil' DWR coating, but this has proved adequate for me so far and with the proper treatment with Nikwax or equivalent should keep the water out just fine. There are other overtrousers with better features, but for £40 you can't go much wrong with these.

These are a good pair of trousers for hill walking. They take up hardly any space in a rucksack, simple to put on because of the long leg zip. only one major problem of them is they seem very fragile. I have now got hundreds of rips on the leg where the fabric has torn. If your on a route that has any rocks about then be very careful with these. the did keep the rain off very well. For the fact of have a pair of waterproof trousers that would last its not the best £40 i have ever spent.

RE: Berghaus Deluge Overtrouser

I have short stumpy legs and most overtrousers are too long for me, this just results in a sagging crotch which in turn reduces stride length. In the past I've torn the seams out of waterproof kex leaping over brooks etc, but so far these have been great. I like the £40 price too, as I say I've ripped too many pairs to spend big money. They keep out a good amount of rain too. I keep mine in a mesh stuff sack, compressed to about 7x5 ".

Mine have been brilliant. They've kept me dry through all sorts of weather. Mine have let water in after about a year and a half which might not be a long time, but at £40, believe me im not complainging

Re: Berghaus Deluge Overtrouser

I bought a pair of these whilst they were on offer last year for around £20.

When I was looking for waterproof overtrousers they were either cheap and flimsy "shops own brand" or very expensive (for me) reliable names at around the £100 mark.

With that in mind, I was initially worried as to how a £40 pair of overtrousers would cope. I thought they'd be rattling like a crisp bag and leaking in a heavy downpour.

I must admit to being very impressed.

They've held out during heavy wind-driven showers, they're comfortable and fairly quiet given that they're made from Berghaus Aquafoil.

They roll up and sit in my rucksack taking up very little space.

The full length zip makes putting them on over my boots a breeze and the 'popper' storm-flap down the side of each leg gives double protection keeping out the worst of the weather.

The only downside is getting into my trouser pockets underneath as the Berghaus Deluge do not have any pocket 'slits'.

In order to access my Craghoppers I have to pull the overtrousers down slightly and go into my trouser pockets from the elasticated waist band at the top.

Not very practical, especially if you're in full kit.

Unfortunately the venting zip and poppers at the top of the leg are no help as they are too low down to be used as pocket access.

As I've pointed out elsewhere in these forums in the past, I'm quite willing to spend a couple of hundred on a decent waterproof jacket but, for some reason, I resent paying a hundred quid for a pair of overtrousers.

I honestly don't know why. What is the point of being warm and dry on your top half whilst your bottom half is wet and cold?

Perhaps it's psychological. Jackets can be stylish, practical, technical, colourful, hard wearing, good looking - whatever you want but trousers are.......trousers.

Anyway, as far as the Berghaus Deluge go, if they only last me a season or two I'll be quite happy - even if I'd paid £40 for them. And at that price I'm not going to worry about getting them snagged, scraped or ripped.
