Berghaus 4 Seasons Trek

This winter jacket is made from Gore Pro Shell fabric with the new Micro Grid Backer to provide excellent condensation control, although in this case the lighter green areas have a ripstop fabric to resist tears. The jacket gets a front zip with a double stormflap to keep the worst of driving winter rain out. Very long side vents allow airflow when condensation starts building up inside the jacket too. There are two very large chest pockets, plus an additional map pocket behind the main zip stormflaps. The hood folds down to the collar very neatly and has a superb peak, volume adjuster and general fit and movement. Movement in the sleeves is also very good. So lots of great features for mountaineering, scrambling and hill-walking in winter. But this is a very short jacket, and it doesn’t even get a scooped tail to protect the rear a little more when sitting in the snow or nestling on a winter belay – and this is the main drawback of this design, even for climbers who generally like short jackets. Walkers will surely prefer something a little longer in winter to keep the cold, wet and windy weather at bay.

Outer: 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell Adamas, 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell Cassis with Micro Grid Backer
Inner: none
Fabric waterproofness: extremely waterproof
Fabric breathability: extremely breathable
Sizes: S-XXL (men’s); 8-18 (women’s)
Weight: 544g (size L)
Made in China
Stores in UK: no info provided

Verdict: Great features and fabric are spoilt by it being too short for adequate protection in the winter unless worn with salopettes.

In my opinion this jacket is the worst winter jacket own. I have used it Once, which was in Iceland. The Jacket wetted out in 5 minutes, then the water proceeded to push through the goretex. The stitching on the Pockets, cuffs, and all major zips is coming undone. However, this has also happened on Another 4 season trek, belonging to a friend. Overall, in my opinion, a shoddy jacket.

I bought a 4 seasons trek a few months ago, and was a little surprised buy the 3/5 review in Trail. I find this jacket to be absolutely bomb proof. The material is more substantial than my other ProShell (ME Kongur). Some of the design features make sense; the draw cords for the hood are hidden away so they don’t whip you in the face when the wind blows. The main criticism in Trail was the length of the jacket being too short, well I’m 6’4” and the Berghaus is the same length down my back as the ME. Don’t get me wrong I like my Kongur but I find the Berghaus more substantial and made for tougher weather. Noticed also that Berghaus gear is criticised as being chav wear, so if you see a 6 foot skin head in the Peak district in a red Berghaus Jacket feel free to walk up and call me a chav……..
