This insulated jacket is a shining example of good, functional gear. The first thing you notice when you put it on is that it feels great to wear. The soft and light Pertex Microlight fabric and the Primaloft fill make the jacket really comfortable and warm when on, which is just the ticket on a cold, blustery crag! After you’ve got over how nice it feels, you’ll notice its comprehensive list of features. It comes with its own stuffsack, the hood adjusts and rolls away, and all the pockets can be zipped up. The length of the jacket is also better than others as there is a scooped tail to keep you bottom warm. But jackets that use pockets as a means of storage, such as the Infinity Light, mean you are not (no pun intended) stuffed if you lose the sack. There is no women’s-specific cut, therefore you may want to wait and buy the new ladies’ Photon – out soon.

After much deliberation and searching i settled on the Photon Hoodie as a mid layer and general lounge around top for summits and belays. A brilliant investment. The soft pertex means it is hard to snag on rocks and rough surfaces, and also aids getting it on and off, often when hands are numb and your in a hurry. In terms of insulating properties it is spot on, not so hot that if you take a few steps it needs unzipping, yet will keep you warm on those cold winter summits. The hood is a great design, it can accomodate a helmet, yet due to a velco tab at the back can be used day to day. The smock style hood is also useful on windy days as it forms a good thick layer around you neck. In terms of cut, its a good fit, a good length so it wont ride up if climbing or srambling, yet not too long to get in the way. It is also not too restrictive, it allows a good level of movement. All in all you honestly couldnt go wrong, and fits in on a high street as well as any peak. Whats more with it being synthetic you havent to be as wary as if it were a down jacket.

I have used this jacket all winter, for me who tends to run hot its a perfect balance of weight v warmth. Mine was way under the retail price so i may be biased on value marks(but bargains are there to be taken)! Incrediblly tiny pack size and great hood.(stuffs into its on well placed pocket!
