I normally wear a variety of both synthetic and merino base layers and I have to admit I’m not convinced by merino although they are all the rage nowadays. I agree that it’s comfy next to your skin and it is certainly much less anti-social then smelly synthetics but I have doubts about its wicking properties as it can feel cold and clammy when I get really sweaty.
The Cambia feels nice next to your skin, better than most synthetics. Although I don’t have the figure for tight body hugging base layers I found the cut to be baggy and unflattering. However I do applaud Paramo for having a women’s XL that is larger than a size 14, when will other manufacturers follow suit?
The reversible design means that all the seams are flat stitched and unobtrusive under a sack. The different sides (one warmer, one wicking) are identified with different colour labels at the bottom, however I can never remember which colour mean wicking or warmer so this could be made clearer!
The long sleeve design makes the top ideally suited for winter and colder weather and was fine on its own under a soft shell while active. Both sides wick sweat away quickly and effectively in a layering system. I find the bit of my back that goes under my sack to be the main problem area when I get hot, all base layers get wet here as the sack stops the wicking process. The Cambia did get wet but stayed warm with no clamminess and dried very quickly when my sack was removed.
I didn’t notice any smelliness while I was wearing the top and I could have certainly worn the top again the day after without felling or offending anyone.
A great, well performing base layer if prefer a synthetic top rather than merino. If you do prefer merino perhaps this could be the one to change your mind?
