Alpkit Filo 2011

£80.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 0

At just £80 the Alpkit Filo blows everything else off the mountain in terms of price. But it’s also a top-of-the-mountain performer as it is very warm thanks to the use of plenty of quality down. You get a hood too that can be removed so this is ideal for throwing on in the coldest of winter conditions. In terms of features you get a good anti-snag strip behind the main zip that prevents snagging and also keeps the draughts out. A particularly good detail is the long scooped tail, which adds better protection to the lower back than any other jacket here. You get the usual couple of pockets and elasticated cuffs. The hood has a wired peak, which is an added bonus for protection in the wind. For most outdoor use this is ideal as it is practical on the hill and you can whip off the hood for a session in the pub. But at 772g the Alpkit Filo is pretty heavy, so it is not the best for stashing in a rucksack and backpacking. It would be nice to have a hood that moved a little better with the head and perhaps had a volume adjuster. You don’t get adjustable cuffs either. The main problem though is you can only get this online direct from the manufacturer, so there is no chance of trying before you buy.

Outer micro ripstop nylon

Weight 772g (size men’s L)

The Alpkit Filo is unbeatable on price but equally superb if you’re sitting on a winter summit at sunset or making a brew outside a tent. It won ‘Best Value’ in our test.
