Rab Treklite Pant

£60.00

LFTO rating rating is 5

The Treklite is exceptionally comfortable, thanks to its lightweight, stretchy fabric that feels good against the skin and their well-shaped articulated knees. They come with an integral belt and stretch waist so you can be sure of a comfortable fit, but they only come in one leg length for each size, which may put some off. The fabric feels cool enough in warmer weather, yet stops wind effectively and sheds water well, making them a reasonable bet for colder days,  too. They also dry quickly when they get wet. There’s a good selection of pockets including a zipped one on the leg, and they look good enough to wear in the pub as well as on the hill. If you only have room for one pair of walking trousers in your wardrobe, these would be a good bet.

I got these cheap and wouldn't say they are worth anything like £60-70. That said, alternatives are also priced around this mark or higher. The zip pockets are well made as are the trousers as a whole. No less than I would expect from Rab, who generally, imho, make solid products. They are cut okay for me and unlike other comments I have read, I find the belt works okay for me. They are a bit high waisted and tight in the crotch so try before you buy ideally. Performance-wise, I cannot vouch for any water resistance as I have been lucky enough to avoid the rain in them so far. I would imagine that as they are a slightly shiny, shell-suit-esque material, that they would resist quite well. They are light and comfortable but not when it is warmer. Even in February I found myself thinking that they were a bit too warm and close fitting to be comfortable. I had a similar problem ages ago with TNF convertable trousers that were obviously designed for sumer use (zipped off to become shorts) but which were just not breathable. This means that they are strictly winter trousers from now on for me. Shame, as otherwise they fit the bill pretty much and I got them for £29, which still represents good value, I think. The search for the perfect walking trouser continues.

These versatile mountain pants have served me well over the last few months. Worn on multi-day adventures in Snowdonia covering the Welsh 3000s, and Winter Climbing on the North Face of Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons. In desperately cold weather I wear a long john style base layer underneath these and this system works perfectly for me. On long treks the 'ride' can sink a little as it is quite long, but this I have cured with a pair of braces. I have several pairs of soft shell pant, but this is the one I reach for first when heading outdoors.
