The fleece-lined waist band lacks elastic, but they come with an integral webbing belt which holds them up just fine. The Stretchlite Mountain fabric is light and stretchy and felt soft against the skin, while the articulated knees made them a delight to move in. They also come in regular and long leg lengths – a big bonus for getting the right fit. The soft, stretchy fabric and pre-bent knees means you’ll hardly notice you are wearing them. They coped admirably in clag and drizzle and held their own even when the heavens really opened, eventually letting some water through at the seams. Great pockets, including a deep but subtle cargo one.

Verdict: Exceptionally versatile soft shell trousers perfect for winter, autumn and spring. A good compromise between warmth, breathability and water repellence and a great price.
