Montane Terra Thermic

£65.00

LFTO rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

These Montane Terra Thermic pants are slightly baggy and long, but otherwise wonderfully comfortable with a very soft fleece/mesh lining. A perfect belt/ elastic waist combination gives them a comfortable finish. Good breathability and all-round versatility. Leg zips provide venting and easy entry while the Tactel nylon outer fabric repels wind, drizzle and light rain well.

Verdict: Full-on winter walking pants that offer plenty of warmth and weather-resistance, yet breathe and vent well too. Wonderfully soft and comfortable to wear and reasonably stylish looking in an ‘outdoor’ sense.

When you first pick these up in the gear shop, you do the regular ooh these look interesting kind of little noises, then you look a bit closer.. These trousers are great all year round trousers for all sorts of walking/hiking, be it a valley walk through Dovedale in the White Peak or a multi day trek in Snowdonia. They are very lightweight, comfy, and extremely durable with just the right amount of stretch/flexibilty in them for whatever youre doing. I was slightly concerned at first about how well these would perform when scrambling, as they're somewhat thinner than my trusty craghopper kiwi's, and as such i was concerned about possible tears esp on the seams, but a trip up Blencathra via Sharp Edge soon proved me wrong!! The 2/3 zip vents are great for when you get too hot, and with the tags on the pullers(something ive found that a few manufacturers seem to forget about) are easy to do up and to vent. The wide almost flared leg bottoms on these, combined with the zips makes putting them on over boots as easy as 1,2,3. All this combined with the water resistance coating on them makes them the best pair of walking trousers ive ever owned. Think ill be investing in the thermal version for winter as well, at £65 a bargain!!

I used these for the first time in some pretty rotten conditions the other day in the Cairngorms - comfortable whilst walking through rain/sleet and then in a vicious icy gale - felt warm and windproof the whole time. The pull out security pocket is a nifty little feature, as are the 3/4 length zips which can be used to shed excess warmth quickly, as well as making them easy to get on over big winter boots. I was really impressed by the way they handled the rain though - they didn't seem to wet out at all and even when I stopped moving I didn't get chilly. I would replace them if they were lost or chewed by wild Scottish rabbits with huge teeth and I think they're worth every penny!
