Vaude Hogan Ultralight 1 2009

£210.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Vaude Hogan Ultralight 1 tent feels instantly user-friendly. Pitching is straightforward as the Y-shaped pole assembly clips in easily, giving a freestanding structure. Although it pitches inner-first, it’s fast, so pitching and striking in wet weather isn’t as much of an issue as it could be. The pitching instructions are sewn in to the stuffsack, which is handy. I can sit upright at the door, and there’s plenty of room inside for sleeping bag, mat and gear. The floor and flysheet have a very high hydrostatic head, meaning outstanding waterproofing. The inner door is part mesh for ventilation with midge resistance. Mini poles at the foot hold the fabric clear of your sleeping bag. A useful touch is the pockets by the door, and the webbing used to attach the pole clips to the inner doubles as accessory hangers for a tent light. But the porch is very small, and lets down an otherwise cracking tent. It’s so tight for space that I had to bring my pack inside with me; and cooking in the porch if it’s raining or windy can be awkward.

Verdict: The Vaude Hogan Ultralight 1 is a lightweight, stable, well-specified tent that’s easy to use on the hill. With a larger porch it would be outstanding.

Light enough for one to carry, it will be luxurious; do-able for two, it will then be ultralight. Despite it’s weight performances, the Hogan Ultralight 1 guaranties you a good protection against bad weather during three seasons. It is as such very versatile while still being technical. There’s not that much products on the market which combines both. Finally the good quality of materials guaranties that this tent will last for long. However if you are really looking for a two persons tent, you should go for the classical Vaude Hogan Ultralight or Vaude Odyssee which are more spacious. The 4 season version of this tent is the Hogan Ultralight Argon. I took this tent around Spain on the back of my bike, camped in heavy rain and blazing sunshine with no issues at all. This tent pitches in seconds and breaks down just as fast, then packs away into a tiny space. Well recomended.
