The North Face Spectrum 23

£225.00

The Spectrum is a 2-person sub-2kg tent that saves weight by ditching the inner and relying on its design to keep out the condensation and rain. There’s loads of ventilation in the roof and at each end to allow airflow and hopefully minimise condensation. This shelter can also withstand 135mph winds, which the manufacturers claim is far in excess of other lightweights. The colour-coded poles clip to the outside of the flysheet for a rapid pitch. The outer door is at one end and has a double zip so you can vent the top. Inside you get a porch for a couple of rucksacks. There is a mesh door to the inner and then you enter a very large living space with plenty of room for two to sit up. But it is a single-skin tent, so condensation may still be a problem in cooler conditions no matter how much venting there is. It’s therefore probably best for a fast and light trip over a summer weekend rather than multi-day trips in varied weather conditions.

Verdict Buy it if you want a spacious, stable design for single nights in warm weather rather than multiple nights in varied weather.

When I collected my package from my summer camp's mailroom I knew it was my new North Face Spectrum 23 tent but what I couldn't believe was how small the package was. It was about 14 or so inches long and no thicker in diameter than an economy kitchen roll with a weight less than a bag of Arabica coffee beans. When I unpacked it and laid it out I was even more amazed, it was just what I wanted; light quick to construct and small enough to fit into my pack. I used it to hike a stretch of the Appalachian Trail in Maine from Mt Katahdin to Monson (100 Miles) and the Spectrum 23 did just the job. It was a joy to unpack and sleep in every night and kept me warm and snug! Be warned though however with a lightweight 1 skinned tent you loose a few luxuries like waking up nice and dry. The vent is a little small and the condensation can be a bit of a bummer in the morning but that was well worth it for less baggage! The Spectrum 23 is a great tent especially at the price I paid, $189.00 back in the day when you could get two bucks for your pound!

Re: The North Face Spectrum 23

Used this in gales and rain in Wales, withstood the weather brilliantly, the condensation was bad though. I sold it soon after as it was cramped for two people and our down bags suffered too badly.
