Macpac Microlight

£200.00

LFTO rating rating is 2
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

This 2-person backpacking tent is very light at just over 2kg and very easy to pitch as it has only one pole. It pitches outer-first, which is ideal in wet weather, and there is ladder lock adjustment for easy tensioning of the tent. There is one entrance and one porch, which extends down one side of the tent. You can open up virtually the whole side of the tent with the doors opening to the sides to expose the spacious porch that is ideal for two rucksacks. The inner doors have a zip-out panel as well as a midge net so you get reasonable control over ventilation. Inside the inner two campers can sit up at a squeeze. There’s also space for two to lie down, if you are not too big and don’t mind being very close! But this is really a one-person tent that can be used for two smaller people and the width is a clear indication of this, being some 30cm narrower than most tents in this class. The outer doors also only get one zip pull, so you cannot vent the doors from the top when cooking in the porch. The pegs are quite sore on the hands too.

Verdict: Buy it if you want a small tent with one reasonably large porch for overnight use rather than multi-day use.

Whilst certainly not as light as some more modern tents it has given me years of trouble free use from festivals to the top of the lake district. Yes some are lighter, and yes better venting would help but this is a well made and bombproof tent. Good in high wind and rain and very easy to pitch. Accomodation is good for one person, but like ALL one person tents headroom is at a premium. I think that it deserves a higher rating from LFO personally and agree that time and disinterest has lowered their opinion of this useful bit of kit.

this tent is in the 2 man section becuase of the .5 it is classed as 1.5 man or should i say 1 and mini me. this tent is probaly the best and most solidly built one man tent on the market i did a section of the cornish coast last year and had to wild camp i woke up early hours in the morning and the winds had got up or should i say wild it was well in excess of 45 mph and withstood that without throwing a peg we found out later it was 56 mph in that area from the met office later that day. the tent is twice the weight of the laser comp but you also get twice the room and i would say better material takes 2-3 minutes to set up so in heavy rain it a great advantage but like all tents with small airvents or no airvents it suffers with condensation so you need a small bar mat to wipe the door down to open it so you are dry ample storage space ive had a 80ltr rucksack in the porch but have not cooked in it had bad experience with fire not chancing it. oh yes and my tent only weighs 1.68 kilos but mine is 4 years old dont know whether they have updated it if they have they have done a bad job making it heavier

I don't know why this tent is in the 2 persons section as on Macpacs own website it is a 1 person tent??? Maybe that's why it has scored so poorly with the reviewer. Well I bought one and think it's the mutts nuts. It so easy to erect it really couldn't be simpler. One pole, 4 guys and some pegs. If it's a 2 person tent you want look elsewhere but as a 1 person tent it is very difficult to beat.

RE: Macpac Microlight

Yes, I agree with the previous comment, the Microlight is a quality very generously sized SOLO well spec'd strong durable easy to pitch tent which in my opinion is under rated (probably because it's been around for some time and lost favour with the fasion conscious).
