How do I wash my sleeping bag?

If your bag is synthetic, just bung it in the machine on gentle wash with a handful of pure soap flakes. If your bag is down, brace yourself – it’s a bath job.
1 Run a bath of lukewarm water, and add a cleaner like Nikwax Down Wash.
2 Lie the bag in the water and gently squeeze the soap through it. Do not lift or twist it as this could damage the internal stitching.
3 To rinse, refill the bath at least three times, gently squeezing the clean water through the bag. Dry synthetic and down bags in a tumble dryer (cool cycle). Never dry-clean a sleeping bag. chuck A couple of tennis balls in the tumble dryer with your bag will help break up any clumping.
4 If you can’t face the above, try a pro cleaner such as WE Franklin (Sheffield) – tel. (0114) 268 6161
