Osprey Aether 70/Ariel 65

£130.00

LFTO rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

This backpacking rucksack, which comes in men’s and women’s styles, hits a completely different user to other ‘sacks in its class as it can be used for a wide variety of loads and still maintain a great performance. Firstly, check the weight. At 2070g it’s very light for a 70 litre ‘sack. But of further interest is the unique compression system that allows the front to be compressed to make it very stable even when half full. Good, too, are the stretch pockets and stretch wand pockets. Side compression straps with quick-release buckles are also provided and a pair of trekking poles are rock-solid when stowed on the side of this ‘sack. The lid can be raised to allow extra capacity, or it can be removed and turned into a waistpack. Air flow is good around the back, thanks to the tiny raised pyramids of the Airscape foam back panel. You can even have the hipbelt moulded to your body. But do you need a lid that converts to a waistpack? Would you prefer a floating lid design that had a baffle to ensure water did not creep into the main compartment? There are no side pockets either, and other ‘sacks are definitely better for heavy loads and durability.

Capacity: 70 litres (men’s Aether); 65 Litres (women’s Ariel)
Materials: 210d double ripstop, 210d Oxford nylon, 500d Kodra 2-way stretch woven nylon with Lycra, 500d stretch power mesh
Features: Airscape raised foam back panel; Isoform hipbelt; Straightjacket compression system; lid converts to waistbelt; twin main compartments with top and base entry; stretch front and side pockets; side compression/ski/accessory security strap; hydration system-compatible
Weight: 2070kg
Made in Vietnam
Stores in UK: England 45; Wales 4; Scotland 15; Ireland 4

Verdict: Buy it if you want one ‘sack for day walks and light to medium loads when trekking hut-to-hut or backpacking over shorter trips this is ideal.

I bought an Ariel 65 as my only backpack. It compresses well enough to use as a day sack (I carry a large camera so need more capacity than most people) but is more than big enough for backpacking. When I bought it I never thought I would use the lid as a waist-pack and would have prefered a sealed lid. However it has actually turned out to be very useful and has been used more than the pack has! This is an excellent and well made sack that is very comfortable to carry.

I have Aether sac and can honestly say haven't worn a more comfortable bag. I was sceptical over the moulded hip belt, but over a long long weekend in Ireland, the rucksac did not put a foot wrong. It carried all my stuff over, compressed down enough to be used as a daysack and then carried it all back. Well done Osprey, I shall buy from you again!!

I bought an Aether in 2007 to tackle the Dalesway in march , thinking i`d need at least 70L as i was backpacking all the way. Despite a load of 23 kilos (I`v since learned my lesson !!) it coped faultlessly , swallowing my heap of gear easily . Comfort of course is a big issue for seemingly endless days and i can honestly say it became a pleasure to carry , and after a succession of lowe-alpine sacks i can see why the Ospreys are so popular . They are very well designed and the expanding front pocket is a priceless bonus , great for swallowing waterproofs , hat , gloves etc so you don`t have to open the main compartment and rummage around , making life so much easier . I thought £120 was steep but it really is worth every penny . I`ve since used it on the W.H.W as well as 10 kilo overnight trips with a smaller load and hardly noticed i was wearing it . A highly recommended addition to any kit cupboard . Chris.

Have this (the Ariel 65) as well as the Stratos 32. I don't normally go for 'designed for women' rucksacks, but after trying them both in the shop, the Ariel was definitely more comfortable. I can get everything in it for a weekends' camping and the weight is so well dispersed I was amazed at how easy it was to carry the load. No hip pockets, or smaller compartments is a minor pain, but only because I'm used to the pockets on the smaller Ospreys. But for comfort its head and shoulders above anything else I've tried.

RE: Osprey Aether 70/Ariel 65

One pack to rule them all. To me this is the ultimate high capacity compromise between less durable lightweight models and the heavy monsters that usually fall into this size category. I've used one for some time now, for hundreds of miles (thousands thinking about it) and it shows minimal wear. Could've got away with the smaller 60l version for most things, but this pack has even proved comfortable when overloaded with coal/wood during a walk in to bothies. The compression system is excellent at stabilising the load and the pack is capable of carrying skis or a snowboard if thats your thing. I really can't find fault in this bit of kit. TD

RE: Osprey Aether 70/Ariel 65

Got this with a Daylite pack that fits on to the back piggy back style, great for short walks from camp, the outer pockets strech to fit lots of extras in. I got a atmos 35 for Days and Scrambaling but the Aether 70 is perfect for a longer trip. My Girl friend hasthe 65 and loves it with a piggy back day pack she has the stratos 32 for days out. Had them all for a while now and no faults as yet !! Could do with a little trolly after a long day but ha ho !!
