Pennine Fastlock 260 (2012)

£35.00

Probably the most common complaint walkers have with trekking poles is that the internal locking mechanism becomes impossible to lock or unlock and is difficult at the best of times with wet, cold or gloved hands. A popular alternative to the internal expansion lock is an external snaplock, where a lever is flipped closed to lock the pole sections in ...

Karrimor Aruba 2009

£35.00

The Karrimor Aruba is a good, robust sandal. The sole unit is well-padded to provide a comfortable ride on hard or rocky surfaces. There is a good outsole lug pattern that will bite into grassy campsites and muddy ground to allow you to keep moving. Some reasonable stiffness in the sole takes the worst of the strain out of uneven ...

Hi-Tec V-Lite Diablo 2009

£40.00

For me the Hi-Tec V-Lite Diablo was more comfortable than it looks. There’s a rubber toe box to provide protection and prevent toes creeping beyond the end of the sole. The upper is stretchy and so is the lacing system, so once cranked up it holds the foot comfortably in place while allowing movement. The result is that the foot ...

The North Face Mead 2009

£40.00

The The North Face Mead is a nice stiff sandal, so use it for river crossings and it is going to be ideal. Underfoot there is a reasonably aggressive pattern of lugs that are designed to channel water away, but also there are lugs to give traction on muddy grass, say when crossing a campsite. The footbed is antimicrobial, so ...

Trezeta Idaho Kid

£45.00

An Alpine style with a branded Vibram outsole and waterproof construction make the Trezeta Idaho Kid children’s boot look appealing. The lacing extends closer to the toes than others for a more precise fit, while the toe box and heel cup are reasonably supportive and offer protection for rocky ground.  But the very shallow lug pattern on the sole limits ...

Hi-Tec Altitude Lite IV WP JR

£30.00

The Hi-Tec Altitude Lite IV WP JR children’s boot is an excellent price for what you get. There is a conventional upper with reasonable stiffness in the sole and toe box for protection and support on irregular terrain. Underfoot there is a good cushioning plus a very grippy pattern of lugs for the mud. But the stiffness in the sole ...

Regatta Crusoe 2009

£25.00

The low price of the Regatta Crusoe is instantly appealing. And you get an awful lot of practical features for your cash. The Crusoe has a good three-point adjustment strap system, with Velcro and neoprene padding. The straps are wide at the forefoot, to provide extra protection. Underfoot there is a good, sturdy footbed that is stiff enough to take ...

Karrimor Kodiak 30

£40.00

At just 844g  this 30-40 litre rucksack is one of the lightest sacks in this review. It is extremely simple, yet it manages to embody the basics of functional performance. So you get a padded back system, with some airflow channels to reduce sweat buildup. The waistbelt is a basic webbing design but it is wide enough to be reasonably ...

Outwell Steel Vacuum Flask

£12.00

This flask kept the contents very hot. The lid can be used as a cup and has a plastic liner to protect the lips from scalds. The stopper is the press-down variety, and the outside has a grippy, anodised finish. But the press-down pourer may not be to everyone’s liking as this type can clog up, so it’s not ideal ...

Craghoppers Kiwi Winter Lined

£40.00

These winter trousers from Craghoppers are a superb fit for me and a good length. The elasticated waist, backed up with a webbing belt, is excellent. The fleecy lining is very soft and feels great against the skin. Basically a lined version of a normal walking trouser. They provide plenty of insulation and keep the wind out, but aren’t as ...

Gelert Vesanto

£40.00

This windproof fleece from Gelert is a generous fit without being overly big. The collar is high and snug and it has elasticated cuffs, which are both comfortable and versatile. The fabric also feels soft against the skin. A simple but effective warm and windproof jacket that is superb value for money. Main gripe is the pockets, which double as ...

Timberland System Fleece Vest

£40.00

This fleece mid layer is a good all-rounder if you want some proper pockets but don’t want to look like you’ve just stepped off the cable car from the high peaks. The fabric has a tight knit, making it a little more wind-resistant than some without reducing breathability. The material also looks quite inoffensive and not overtly technical. Two chest ...

Lowe Alpine Kit Bag 70

£40.00

This kit bag has a simple layout comprising of a central lockable zip entry to the main compartment and a pair of oversized handles to allow this to be worn as a backpack. Merrell Chameleon II Clip

£45.00

Merrell sandals are well-proven and regularly feature at the top of Trail’s annual summer footwear review. This latest version offers most of what most people will want and it’s ideal for most situations too, a bit like a pair of clean and comfortable jeans. The price is a great too, sitting around the middle of the scale, yet still managing ...

Karrimor Kiwi

£40.00

Karrimor keeps dipping in and out of the outdoor market as the backroom boys and girls find they have new owners every few years. However, it seems they are back for good this time with some niche product to tempt the old faithful and the fresher into the fold. The Karrimor Kiwi sandal does look striking similar to the classic ...

Hi-Tec V-Lite Sirocco

£30.00

This sandal makes use of a synthetic upper which is fast-drying, so this would be ideal for river crossings and generally getting damp around a campsite. It does not have a conventional strap system: instead it has a drawcorded and elasticated panel that pulls the top of the foot into the heel. This is a very comfortable design that is ...

The North Face El Porto Convertible

£35.00

This is a great sandal for water sports and general use. The straps are synthetic, so they are fast-drying. There are three Velcro strips to allow secure adjustment, and all the straps are lined with neoprene. The straps around the toes are quite wide, so they don’t dig in and also they add a little protection to the sides of ...

Gelert X-Treme Lite 800

£35.00

This synthetic sleeping bag from Gelert is only 800g, much less than many competitors, and also rather short. It doesn’t have a shoulder baffle, so is really only warm enough for summer or two-season use, but it has a nice hood with a drawcord closure. The soft feel of the nylon shell is good, too.

Hi-Tec Altitude II

£30.00

These sandals from Hi-Tec are not as comfortable as some at first, but some tweaking soon ensures a good fit with plenty of support. The neoprene-lined straps feel very comfortable next to your skin, and the soft microfibre footbeds are great. Great to walk in, offering plenty of support and good traction. The footbeds hold your feet still, even when ...

Brasher Women’s Trekker

£45.00

These sandals from Brasher are really comfortable straight from the box, courtesy of neoprene-lined straps and cushioned suede footbeds. The straps hold your feet perfectly in place, and the two attachment points provide plenty of support. The soft leather straps, grippy rubber sole and protective raised toe bumper make these really good for walking. They cope well on uneven terrain.
