Euro Hike Hydro 35+5 (2011)

£40.00

One of the cheaper models and as a result doesn’t have the technical features of others. The back system uses simple padding that does keep the load close to your centre of gravity, but doesn’t allow air to circulate and so quickly leads to a sweaty and uncomfortable back. Also it isn’t very well protected and you have to be ...

Regatta Magnitude III

£40.00

An inexpensive jacket, the Magnitude III is as classic an example of a cagoule as you’re likely to see. In use, perhaps not surprisingly, it’s not the most technical, although it is one of the few to come with a mesh-lined inner to help the outer fabric absorb condensed moisture. The face fabric is not that effective when it comes ...

Technicals Lined Venture 2011

£35.00

The Technicals Lined Venture mountain trousers weigh 436g (size men’s L); polycotton fabric with antibacterial treatment; fleece-lined for extra insulation. But no stretch, which leads to restricted movement; slower-drying than higher-priced options; less water-resistant and abrasion-resistant than high priced options; no ankle cuff adjustment; too warm for summer.

£40.00

The Result Performance R111F Urban Fell general-purpose waterproof weighs 582g (size M); HydraDri waterproof and breathable fabric with mesh lining; front zip gets double stormflaps; two hip pockets; small internal chest pocket, But pocket access easily obscured by rucksack belts; very basic rollaway hood with drawcords that are left to fly in the face.

Rab Ultra Gaiter Wmns 2010

£25.00

The Rab Ultra Gaiter Wmns’ eVent fabric is very breathable; durable underboot strap is easy to adjust and replace; Velcro and zips at opening keep gaiter secure. But I found it almost impossible to get the lace hook over my laces and when I did I couldn’t do up the press stud, so not fantastic fit-wise (size M).

Technicals Aurora 2010

£45.00

The Auroras are wonderfully lightweight, but they feel quite plasticky and don’t breathe as well as some. They’re waterproof, though, and are a good choice for emergency use. The openings on each hip give easy access to the pockets in your walking trousers but come at the expense of waterproofness. There’s a zipped rear pocket too. Although there’s a zip ...

Hawkshead Pakka 2010

£15.00

Quite a loose fit but the Pakkas come in two leg lengths to help you get a good fit. The fabric has a good DWR coating so water runs off easily, but it doesn’t breathe as well as some and feels quite plasticky. They’re incredibly lightweight, though, and for only £15, they’re a great choice for fair-weather walkers who carry ...

Regatta Base Zip-neck base layer

£16.00

A very thick and warm base-layer that can feel itchy when you’re hot and sweaty. It has a nice close-fitting design, with plenty of stretch in the fabric, although it tends to become saggy with wear. The zip-neck collar provides great ventilation when needed, but check you can zip it up properly as the collar is tighter fitting than some. ...

Crocs Captiva 2009

£22.00

Crocs are the benchmark of moulded footwear, and these days they’re commonplace at campsites and in bars. The now classic Cayman is the model most often seen, while the new Captiva shows that Crocs makes other models too. The Captiva is a simple open sandal for women. Its pillowed moulded footbed offers extra comfort without losing support, while plenty of ...

BERGHAUS W ROAM 30

£45.00

Review: The simple and lightweight harness was nicely soft and flexible, although the shoulder straps were set too far apart. Also the chest strap was rather fiddly. A large and lightweight pack with a simple ‘old school’ design that will really appeal to some. However, it’s already looking quite scuffed so the low weight and price probably come at the ...

EUROHIKE WILDERNESS AIR

£25.00

Review: The concave back system was cool and effective without holding the load too far away from the back, and the straps had all the right adjustment and felt comfortable when done up. Cheap plastic buckles and a slightly flimsy polyester fabric make it obvious that this is a budget-end pack, but it carries well enough, even when full, and ...

Regatta Epicentre

£45.00

A good fit in the body and sleeves, but the stiff-ish collar is a little too high, especially when unzipped. The cuffs are too tight to pull up, but a warm and very weatherproof jacket… at the expense of breathability, which is definitely noticeable when walking uphill at speed. Would like a bit more ‘give’ in the fabric, too.

Sprayway Genesis TL

£40.00

This fleece mid layer weighs 576g (size L); midweight fleece, so quite warm; two hip pockets; full-length front zip; adjustable shockcord hem. But heavier than thinner fleece and warmer too, so not that easy to control temperature; pocket access is easily obscured by rucksacks belts; no hood.

Wynnster McKinley/Vail Zip Neck

£25.00

This fleece mid layer weighs 284g (size L); thin fleece ideal for layering; smock design reduces weight; casual design; smart collar; outstanding breathability. But no pockets; no hem drawcord; no hood; smock design limits ability to control temperature.

Craghoppers Axel Trouser

£40.00

These women’s walking trousers have four pockets with zips  –  two hip, one thigh and one back; one-way stretch fabric; zipped fly with metal hook attachment; Velcro tab adjustment on waist; and they’re only £40. But ventilation consists of a small, ineffective mesh-backed hole positioned above the ankle; base of the fly is bulky and sticks into the leg; there ...

£40.00

Zip-off legs make these men’s and women’s walking trousers very practical for backpacking and hill-walking; two map-sized hip pockets; zip leg pocket that just about takes a map; elasticated waist with belt loops; zipped seat pocket. But zip-offs are not cool by any stretch of the imagination; no ankle adjustment; not stretch fabric.

Montrail Molokai

£30.00

This sandal  has sizes from 2.5 women’s and up to 14 men’s; thermo-mouldable footbed (just put them in the oven for two minutes at 107 deg C and then put them on); well-cushioned . But these are flip-flop style sandals with few straps, so they come off easily; the sole is not as aggressive or as stiff as others.
