Gelert Ascent

£15.00

These Gelert Ascent trekking poles have only two sections, which makes for a longer (more bulky) pack-down size. But this also means they’re less prone to slipping than some. With a comfortable handle and reasonable weight, this is a bargain pole for all but the very serious hillwalker. Two-section design makes them easier to adjust and tighten. Adequate performance and ...

Jack Wolfskin Thermo Bottle

£16.00

A rubberised coating provides a more secure grip than most others. Better still the insulating properties are good. You get a press-button closure plus a cup. But others offer better insulating performance for their weight and not everyone is a fan of button-operated pourers, as they tend to clog.   Capacity: 1000mlMaterials: stainless steel flask and cup, plastic stopper  Sizes ...

Lifeventure TIV Vacuum Flask

£17.00

This flask comes in a metal case, while its black, grippy, anodised coating makes it almost too sexy to use! Inside there is a copper coating to improve insulation. Performance was okay and you get clear instructions. But the plastic lining of the cup does not extend as far as some around the lip to prevent burns. The screw-top pourer ...

Vango Anti-shock Walker

£17.00

Vango’s Anti-shock Walker is a bargain pole offering great value for money. The alloy design is quite heavy, though, and the nifty little compasses in the handles don’t always work. Even so, they’re nice poles, with all the essential features and at a reasonable price. Adequate performance on the hill.

Greenheat Base Camp Stove

£19.00

This stove weighs 570g; boil time 12 min to 14 min; simple to use; fuel doesn’t spill if knocked over; fuel is green gel made from sugar cane so more environmentally friendly than most; refills cost just £3.50; 10cm diameter pan supports. But best boil was only slightly more than a simmer; slow boil time.

Primus Stainless Steel Vacuum Flask

£20.00

A beautiful black, grippy, anodised flask with a good performance in the temperature test. The cup has a good plastic lining to prevent sore lips. The stopper has a press-down pourer and can also be easily unscrewed. You also get very good instructions and a spare stopper. But the price kills an otherwise good flask, while some may prefer simpler ...

£35.00

This ultralight rucksack is very light at 636g; superb value; back plate twists with body and aids comfort and stability; mesh pockets; compression system; zipped lid pocket. But its 25 litres capacity means you may have to make sacrifices; lacks extra pockets for snacks; not as reflective as other packs; no accessory cord bungee for stashing extra gear; no hydration ...

Optimus Terra Pan Set 2009

£40.00

The Optimus Terra Pan Set’s neoprene casing can be used to keep cooked food warm while one pot is on the burner. The 1.65 litre pot and frying pan/lid are Teflon-coated and have circular grooves on the base so they grip a stove support better. The 1.70 litre pot is plain aluminium. The plastic pan grip fits and handles all ...

Berghaus Raid Junior

£40.00

Modern styling and some reflective trim give the Berghaus Raid Junior children’s boot shelf appeal. There is a waterproof lining too. Underfoot a Vibram branded outsole is provided with lugs that will give grip on easier terrain. Also the toe box and heel cup are reasonably stiff and protective.  But the very shallow lug pattern on the sole limits grip ...

Craghoppers Kiwi Cargo & Kiwi Makino

£40.00

These are classic walking trousers that are well-proven winners on and off the fell. Made from polycotton, so they are fast-drying, lightweight and reasonably durable, the Kiwi Cargo is a more stylish version of the standard Kiwi. The women’s version is the Kiwi Makino, which has a lower waistline than most. You get loads of pockets including two map-sized hip ...

Craghoppers Kiwi Winter Lined

£40.00

These Craghoppers’ Kiwi Winter Lined pants offer a superb fit and a good length; the elasticated waist is backed up with a webbing belt. The fleecy lining is very soft and feels great against the skin. Blacks Quattro Compact

£40.00

The Quattro is a good all-round trekking pole with a great price of just £40 per pair. Gelert Ottowa

£40.00

This is a lot of jacket for £40. It’s quite heavy, and doesn’t pack down that well, which certainly rules it out for lighter weight walking, but it is very warm, and it certainly keeps some light rain out. It’s reasonably breathable, too. The sizing’s quite big, so try before you buy, and this means the collar is a bit ...

Regatta Wetland Junior

£40.00

The Regatta Wetland Junior’s suede and synthetic upper looks fresh and appealing, and this children’s boot gets a waterproof lining. There is some good stiffness around the toe and heel too for increased durability and protection. The outsole lugs are also reasonably aggressive for getting a grip.  But the low-ankle cuff means you need to avoid deep puddles and terrain ...

Regatta Plateau X-LT Trail

£42.00

This multi-activity shoe from Regatta offers a broad and roomy fit, with ample padding, making them very comfortable to wear. The suede/fabric upper isn’t waterproof, which makes it cool and incredibly breathable, and the beefy toe and heel bumpers offer plenty of protection. It's quite low at the ankle, but that’s not a problem. On dry trails the Plateau performs ...

Nike ACG Cordillera Pant

£45.00

These winter trousers from Nike are made from a wonderfully stretchy soft shell fabric, but are on the big side. They do come with a belt, though. Not as warm as most in their class, so better suited to more energetic going. They keep water at bay well, though, and are really easy to move around in.   Colours: Olive, ...

Nike ACG Cordillera Pant

£45.00

These Nike ACG Cordillera Pants are made from a wonderfully stretchy soft shell fabric. Sadly they’re massive and don’t have belt loops – using only a basic drawcord at the waist.  They’re not as warm as others on the market so better suited to more energetic walking. They keep water at bay well though, and are incredibly easy to move ...

Vasque Breeze (Children’s)

£45.00

The Vasque Breeze (Children’s) is a stylish fabric and suede boot that resembles a smaller version of the adult boot. There is a waterproof lining and a reasonably aggressive outsole lug pattern to keep a grip in the mud. There is good layer of cushioning too to take the pounding out of hard surfaces. But the upper is not likely ...

Stubai Blue Star Light

£45.00

The Blue Star is a well-proven classic ice axe that has been voted Best Buy in past Trail reviews and has provided a popular low-priced option for many years. The design is fairly standard with a straight shaft. The new ‘Light’ version does not have a rubber grip or leash fitted, but on closer inspection the details stack up very ...

Regatta Guyot

£45.00

This soft shell jacket from Regatta is an excellent fit in the body, but the sleeves are frustratingly short – a shame as they have Velcro adjustment and would work well. The fleecy inner feels wonderful, more cosy than most. It’s notably less breathable than the more expensive fabrics, though. The pockets are quite small, but do offer some venting, ...

The North Face Jinxy Mid

£45.00

The The North Face Jinxy Mid is a stylish, waterproof children’s shoe with a mid-cut ankle cuff, so it offers a little more protection than a shoe. The upper is well-supported at the heel, and underfoot there is good stiffness to take the knocks out of uneven, rocky ground.  But the mid-cut ankle cuff is still lower than a boot, ...

£45.00

ReviewAt 672g this ultralight rucksack is very light; can strip down to 642g; internal compression system keeps outside neat; padded hipbelt fins with pockets; three external elasticated pockets; internal and external lid pockets; hydration unit-compatible. But it has only 24 litres capacity; gear can’t be stashed on outside; less reflective than other packs.
