Regatta Baxter (2012)

£30.00

This is a lighter-weight fleece than many out there, using a thinner grade of material that also makes it one of the least expensive too. The downside is a lack of insulation. This really only provides warmth as part of a layering system. It is designed to zip into a corresponding shell jacket. A drawcord around the hem helps to ...

Regatta Magnitude III

£40.00

An inexpensive jacket, the Magnitude III is as classic an example of a cagoule as you’re likely to see. In use, perhaps not surprisingly, it’s not the most technical, although it is one of the few to come with a mesh-lined inner to help the outer fabric absorb condensed moisture. The face fabric is not that effective when it comes ...

Regatta X-ERT 35L 2010

£35.00

The best ‘budget buy’, the Regatta X-ERT 35L (1280g) almost achieves great things: it’s light, perfectly comfy up to a certain load and has an adjustable, ventilated back system. But it has some very eccentric features: most notably the large external pocket with a tiny zipped entrance, two tiny-capacity side pockets and a hidden key stash. Stockists – tel. (0161) ...

Regatta Base Zip-neck base layer

£16.00

A very thick and warm base-layer that can feel itchy when you’re hot and sweaty. It has a nice close-fitting design, with plenty of stretch in the fabric, although it tends to become saggy with wear. The zip-neck collar provides great ventilation when needed, but check you can zip it up properly as the collar is tighter fitting than some. ...

Regatta Mantle

£48.00

The Mantle is quite a short jacket, yet it’s heavy and quite bulky too. This is mainly down to a mesh lining, which is comfortable but unnecessary in this type of jacket, and a stuff-sack pocket that comes with an elastic belt attached. It has a good selection of pockets (none that will take a map) but packaway hood is ...

Regatta Geo V Zip-Off Trouser

£30.00

Odd sizing makes these trousers quite big for the stated waist measurement, and the legs are incredibly baggy, too. The fabric feels good – albeit a bit on the lightweight side for year-round walking. The fact they are convertible makes them better for walking in milder conditions, although they do repel water well and dry quickly. There’s a good selection ...

Regatta X-ERT 25

£35.00

Regatta X-ERT 25 unisex rucksack has an effective concave back system that’s both cool and comfortable. The Regatta X-ERT 25 has well-padded straps that feel soft and spread the load well, although they are perhaps a bit too padded for a pack of this size. Quite heavy, the X-ERT is a little over-elaborate for 25 litres. That said, it has ...

Regatta Epicentre

£45.00

A good fit in the body and sleeves, but the stiff-ish collar is a little too high, especially when unzipped. The cuffs are too tight to pull up, but a warm and very weatherproof jacket… at the expense of breathability, which is definitely noticeable when walking uphill at speed. Would like a bit more ‘give’ in the fabric, too.

Regatta Farley

£15.00

The zip-necked Farley is a good length, but the sleeves are too tight, with no give in the fabric. Good high, snug collar, though. Difficult to wear as a mid-layer as the sleeves are too tight to go over anything else. Good warmth as a base-layer, though, and it dried quickly when wet. A decent-length zip, too.Verdict A lightweight, budget-end ...

Regatta Geo Mountain Pant

£30.00

These hill-walking trousers weigh just 328g; low price tag; 2-way stretch panels on knee and seat; elasticated waist with belt loops and fly; five pockets (three zipped); drawcord ankle cuff adjustment. But pockets are quite small, even when used as handwarmers; only knee and seat panels are stretch; fabric not as durable as some; no map-sized pockets.

Regatta Nebulae

£30.00

Regatta can always be trusted to provide great-value outdoor gear, and this new waterproof jacket is no exception. The Nebulae is made from a robust fabric with a mesh lining for added comfort. The design is fairly standard with two hip pockets and a front zip, single stormflaps on all zips keeping the rain out. There is a hem drawcord ...

Regatta Hydration Bladder 2 litre

£9.00

At less than a tenner, this hydration system is a mouth-watering proposition. It has a lockable bite valve to prevent drips, and the unit did not leak under our 20kg load test. There is a simple screw opening and it all looks like a workable design. But the screw cap is small, so filling and cleaning is not easy. Also ...

Regatta Geo Double ZO

£33.00

The legs of these men’s and women’s walking trousers zip off to create shorts or Capris; elasticated waist with belt loops; 6 pockets; four pockets have zips; ankle adjustment; articulated knees. But zip-offs aren’t cool on the hill or in the pub!; no pockets fully take a map; no diamond crotch; no stretch fabric.

Regatta Arroya/Amity

£40.00

This multi-activity jacket weighs 542g (men’s size L); lots of reflective material so you can be seen at night; rollaway hood with reasonable fit and peak; mesh lining adds comfort; two hip pockets; pit zips for venting; stormflap on main zip. But chest pocket is too small for a OS map; hip pockets easily obscured by rucksack belts; more cash ...

Regatta Invent

£40.00

This windproof fleece would score quite well were it not for the ridiculously baggy cuffs, which are really annoying as well as inefficient. A good fit in the body, with a snug high collar. The fabric is also easy to move in. Really light and compact, it keeps the wind off well and packs down easily. The baggy cuffs let ...
