Merrell Moab Ventilator

£55.00

This multi-activity shoe features a very breathable mesh upper; rubber and suede leather reinforcement; very supportive heel; excellent cushioning; typical great Merrell comfort; aggressive lug pattern on Vibram sole. But sole flex is little squishy, so not ideal for rocky paths; toe box could be a little stiffer; mesh upper extends low down so water will get in easily.

Salomon Exit Peak

£60.00

Really comfortable from the box. A good lacing system gives great support right across the foot and there is plenty of room for your toes. Lovely to walk in on dry ground, with a very grippy sole and flexible uppers. No waterproof lining means that wet feet are inevitable on damp ground, so best-suited to dry paths or travelling.

Karrimor Meridian Low event

£65.00

A bit clumpier than most, mainly courtesy of a very padded upper, but they benefit from a very well-balanced midsole that does a good job of evening out the rough patches without feeling too stiff, and the eVENT waterproof membrane is excellent, keeping water out yet breathing well. They offer good protection for the toe and heel, and the aggressive ...

Garmont Dragontail 2009

£75.00

The Garmont Dragontail is a multi-activity shoe based on the ‘crag approach’ use of multi-activity footwear. So it gets a good, stiff sole unit with sticky rubber to provide great grip on rock as well as being stiff enough to stand on edges easily. A smooth climbing zone around the toe is ideal for more technical climbs. There is good ...

Brasher Calusa XCR

£80.00

This is a tougher multi-activity shoe than you might expect from Brasher, which is perhaps better known for producing ‘softer’ footwear. The Calusa XCR has a mesh and leather upper with a waterproof lining to provide good protection for the foot. But what sets it apart is the tougher-than-average toe box coupled with a very supportive upper that provides good ...

The North Face Hedgehog XCR

£80.00

Good midsole support, which will be appreciated on rougher ground. Fitwise, they are made around an average last, and they have plenty of padding. There is an odd ridge running down the centre of the footbed, though, and this felt very disconcerting. In action, the very low ankle encourages fast movement but doesn’t offer as much support as most shoes ...

Salomon Elios XCR

£85.00

This multi-activity shoe features a Gore-Tex XCR waterproof lining; lots of suede on the upper for durability; solid toe box provides good protection; very supportive heel; very aggressive sole lug pattern is ideal for mud. But you can feel stones through the sole, which lets this otherwise excellent shoe down.
