Columbia Pagora

£50.00

This lightweight multi-activity shoe from Columbia weighs 888g (pair, size 11). It’s available in larger sizes up to size 16 for men and size 11 for women. The suede leather and mesh upper comes with an odour-resistant footbed and deep-lugged outsole that provides good grip in the mud and on grass. There’s good cushioning for hard ground. However, the shoe ...

Karrimor Colorado Low Weatherlite

£50.00

This multi-activity shoe features Weatherlite waterproof lining; tough leather upper; solid toe box; rubber bumper on toe; excellent heel support; aggressive sole unit lug pattern; good cushioning. But 1244g (pair, size 11) is heavier than some; feels a bit ‘clumpy’; waterproof lining may not be as breathable as higher-priced options.

This multi-activity shoe features a suede and mesh upper which offers durability and air flow; rubber rand all the way around; stiffened toe box; supportive heel cup; sole resists pressure of stones well; aggressive sole lugs ideal for mud; close fit at toe due to lacing. Hawkshead Lady Amisk

£65.00

A high ankle cuff and rather sloppy fit makes these shoes feel a bit like an outdoor slipper. They are let down by the lack of support offered by the really soft midsole and very squashy suede and mesh uppers. The lacing system is a little awkward, and the bulky tongue means it’s quite hard to achieve a secure fit. ...

Technicals Nimbus 2009

£65.00

The Technicals Nimbus multi-activity shoe weighs 884g (pair, size 11); mesh upper for maximum breathability; stiffened toe box; reinforcement around shoe for more durability. But no waterproof lining; outsole lug pattern is very shallow and easily clogged so not ideal for grip in mud; very bendy sole unit offers minimal support.

Peter Storm Skiddaw II

£65.00

Very soft, full-grain leather boots that will only really suit women with wide feet as they are very wide across the toes. They’ve got a soft yet supportive ankle cuff, and although the tongue may feel harsh at first, it soon softens with wear. Disappointingly, the lacing system is a bit fiddly, making it difficult to get enough tension across ...

Teva Churn 2011

£67.00

The Teva Churn weighs 584g (pair, size 9); mesh upper and drainage holes allow water out easily; very low-profile, stable platform; well-cushioned; fold-down heel converts shoe to a slide-on shoe; perfect for use in watersports. But away from water has very limited use; sole lugs very shallow so only good in water; upper allows water in easily.

Regatta Apocalypse Mid

£70.00

Generous sizing and very soft uppers make the Apocalypse Mid feel comfortable straight from the box, albeit rather like a pair of loose slippers. They’re unique in this selection because the uppers are made from a soft shell fabric. Coupled with a waterproof lining, this helps them stay waterproof, but also makes them feel rather lacking in support. The fairly ...

Patagonia Huckleberry

£70.00

The padded tongue and luxurious soft lining make these feel like slippers from the box – and they only get better with wear. A slightly narrow shape, but excellent lacing gives a good stable fit. No waterproof lining means that dew or puddles eventually get in, but suede uppers keep a little out and breathability is excellent. Stunning grip on ...

Helly Hansen Trackfinder 2011

£71.00

The Helly Hansen Trackfinder weighs 828g (pair, size 11); extremely breathable mesh upper; sole has good, deep lugs for grip in mud; good stiffness in sole for paths; good cushioning. But toe box offers very little protection; no waterproof lining limits use of shoe; once water enters it cannot easily escape as no drainage ports near base of sides.

Scarpa Oxygen

£75.00

With a lovely soft suede/fabric upper, these will feel good on almost any feet. The lacing works brilliantly, providing a wonderfully supportive and stable fit. With no waterproof lining, wet feet were guaranteed on the hill. However, this does mean they’re very light and breathable – ideal for hot, dry days. Could be stiffer in the midsole.

Columbia Shastalavista 2011

£75.00

The Columbia Shastalavista weighs 984g (pair, size 11); mesh upper for exceptional breathability; great sole unit with good lugs for mud; good cushioning; good stiffness for general walking; good for dry travel. But no waterproof lining; not the best shoe for running as a little too ‘clumpy’; mesh upper not so durable for rockier ground.

Boreal Kira Lady

£75.00

A heavy, masculine-looking shoe with very little support across the foot. Plenty of padding makes them fairly comfortable, but also means they are rather warm. Lack of support and ample padding makes them feel hot and clumsy. The Vibram sole acts as a good shock absorber, though, and the beefy upper keeps water out and protects feet from knocks.

Helly Hansen Manifesto Breathe

£75.00

This lightweight multi-activity shoe from Helly Hanson weighs 864g (pair, size 11). The synthetic upper is fast-drying, while open sides let out water and keep feet cool. There’s a very grippy sole for soft ground. However,  the open sides allow water and mud in easily and provide less protection on rocky ground. It’s more of a protective sandal than a ...

Brasher Calusa XCR

£80.00

An odd fit, as the upper is very stiff and notably pre-shaped, but might be exceptionally comfortable for the right feet. The Calusa is a very stiff shoe that takes the sharp edges off rough ground, however it feels a little too rigid for its low-cut style. Good grip on most surfaces, though.

Teva Ossagon

£85.00

The sizing is small. They do have a lovely soft footbed, though, and an excellent lacing system that gives a very secure fit. Nice and lightweight with a water-resistant suede upper. Although the chunky sole unit provides lots of stability, it feels a little flat for walking on and gives limited grip on softer surfaces.

Keen Genoa Peak WP

£85.00

Lots of padding makes the Genoa feel very comfortable initially but the fit is very narrow. They have a unique round-toed design which can make them feel rather clumsy, and although the all-leather uppers look great, they are quite warm. Lacing system is rather fiddly and doesn’t do a very good job of holding foot securely. Stiff midsole makes them ...

Trezeta Chinook Low

£85.00

A rather broad fit and also quite short so be prepared to go up a size. Quite heavy, with a tough Vibram sole that provides good shock absorption and grip. Out in the hills they performed well, keeping out water even in really wet grass, although they felt a bit hot and sweaty at times. The midsole is really stiff ...

Hi-Tec V-Lite Sonoma WPi

£90.00

The Sonoma were a little stiffer than anticipated when first on, with an oddly rigid tongue, but after a short distance they softened up. The front of the sole is particularly flexible, allowing a natural foot flex and a pleasant gait, and the midsole still provides enough support. Good levels of shock absorption do make a difference on road sections ...

But sole flex is quite soft for rocky terrain; toe box is very soft so offers minimal protection; heavy at 1272g (size 11); pricy.
