Satmap Active 10 Plus

£380.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4.5

The Active 10 Plus is a beefed-up Active 10 and, with a new rechargeable battery conversion kit, it’s a real contender and definitely the best of the OS mapping- compatible devices (all national parks 1:50,000 scale at £50; or £80 per national park at 1:25,000; or user selections available). Its strength is its huge screen, which gives superb definition, but PC transfers are quite complex compared to some devices and although the rechargeable lithium battery lasts well, it’s not an easy job to convert it back to AAs in the field should it run out. The SatMap website planning tool is a real plus, negating the need to buy digital-mapping and, although the unit’s a bit of a lump in the hand, it is easy to use with gloves on.

Brill bit of kit, first time I used it I dropped it onto concrete about 5 feet and only the replacable front cover cracked a bit - easy fix £15 for 3. Easy to update from their website, and has got me out of situations a lot! I bought the bike mount too. Rated 3 stars for value for money as the maps are expensive and accessories, I use 3AA 2700 capacity camera batteries in it to save spending £45 on the pack.

This GPS is so easy to use, very accurate and the mapping detail is just unbeatable. My only negative comments would be to do with Geocaching, I have made a few suggestions to Satmap and they have said they will be addressed in the next software release. What more could you ask for. 10/10

I've owned an A10 for a couple years and I would not be without it. From the first moment I saw the digital OS mapping I was smitten. It's loaded with features but you don't have to be tech minded to use it - it's basic function is entirely intuitive. You simply cannot get lost! I use it for walking, leading groups in the outdoors, biking, running and in the car (on a home made windscreen mount - although I believe there's an official version on the way?). I've used it in aircraft, too - fascinating. It's accurate, reliable, getting better with every software update and mountain rescue teams are using it all over the country. Amazing customer care underpins this brilliant piece of kit. Worth every penny - and that goes for the mapping, too. Can't wait for the next upgrade which is out imminently. It's inspiring to see a small British company beating the likes of Garmin as per the Gadget show - twice! PS I don't work for them - just an avid fan!
