Memory-Map is best known for its Trail magazine award-winning mapping software; but the company also makes dedicated GPS devices too – and the Adventurer 3500 is its big-screen option.
The feature set is stripped right back to the essentials, so you get a large touch-screen, which is very clear, and this provides a menu of basic functions. But I found the operation of this device a little less intuitive than others, even though there are relatively few functions. A stylus is attached to a lanyard, and this makes operation of the touch-screen very quick and precise (and it also makes it exceptionally easy to create a route on screen). It also makes it simple to use with gloves on.
However, scrolling around the map on the touch-screen was a rather hit-and-miss affair as it was quite difficult to be accurate with these movements.
The battery life of the Memory-Map Adventurer 3500 is also around half that of some other units here. In terms of price you can buy a bundled version of the device that includes the whole of Britain on OS 1:50k mapping for just £380, which is an exceptionally good-value option.
