Lowrance Ifinder Expedition C

To download routes, they need to be converted to the right format and loaded on to a memory card using a PC card reader of some sort (not supplied). This card is then slotted into the GPS where the route can be transferred to the internal memory. A long-winded process that spoils an otherwise easy-to-use model with a large clear colour screen and lovely rubber buttons that are easy to press, even with gloves on. Its big screen is easy to read in all light conditions, and the large direction arrow is simple to follow. It picked up a fix quite quickly and this, combined with an electronic compass and barometric altimeter, made navigating easy and interesting. However, it’s huge and very heavy.

VITAL STATS
Size: 14.2 x 6.5 x 3cm
Weight: 247g (including batteries)
Screen: 7.2cm 256 colour TFT
Battery life: Up to 14 hours on two AAs
Routes/waypoints: 100 routes/1,000 waypoints
Works with: Most land/marine mapping software; WAAS/EGNOS-enabled
Contact: 01794 510010, www.lowrance.com

Verdict: Accurate and functional but struggles to compete due to its size, weight and very clunky PC compatibility. A lot of money for what it is.
