Garmin Etrex

£100.00

LFTO rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 4

This GPS unit has a good page sequence to the winner (although it lacks an elevation data page telling you how high you’ve climbed etc). Hooking it up to your computer and downloading routes is also very simple, but you need to buy the data cable separately (around £27). Inputting route co-ordinates by hand is fairly straightforward, but there’s no joystick. It loses a couple of marks for its lack of an electronic compass and barometric altimeter. No colour screen in this price bracket, but the black and white alternative is still easy to follow. The way the accompanying information displayed at the bottom of the page can be flicked through using the up and down buttons is good. There’s a simple trip page which shows accurate distance and time info.

Verdict: Basically the same as the Etrex Summit but minus the barometric altimeter and electronic compass, the Etrex is an excellent, inexpensive, PC-compatible GPS with a very useful data connection.

What a fantastic GPS, why spend more than £130.00 (GPS, Memory Map software and PC cable) when you can get all the info you could possibly want from the Etrex and Memory Map software. Can only imagine needing a more expensive model for climbing Everest !!. Who needs colour screens etc. Remember, the GPS is not a map replacement.

*I like the color so if it is droped, it's easy to find. *Battery life is good depending on how cold it is. *Satilite pic-up fast, but easyly lost in the SW of England. *Easy to use and program. *BUT I WOULD NEVER PUT 100% FATH IN IT. So map and compase allways carryed.

I have had one of these now for the last two years or so. Works easily with my Tracklogs software, battery life is adequate as I keep it for backup rather than all time use. Bought second hand for £30 and cable for £20 so a bargain.

Basic GPS does what it says on the box, my only gripe is that i cant get it to navigate to a grid ref without it being pre programmed into it. Otherwise, nowt wrong with it, has served me well and still does.

Does this version give you an exact grid reference as per the Etrex Summit??

Had this one for tree years now with Memory Map Think it is Great. The version from Garmin only seems to hold one route. If you buy with Memory map the version seems to hold 20 routes. To get full value out of this you do need some map software.
