Zamberlan Crest XCR

£85.00

Like most Zamberlan footwear the Crest XCR multi-activity shoe is a functional design for those who demand performance in the mountains. It came first in our test in April 2007 and is still one to take seriously. You get a Gore-Tex XCR waterproof lining to guarantee dry feet. The upper is a mix of suede leather and synthetics, but you also get a rubber rand around the toe and forefoot areas. The lacing system extends a little further towards the toe than most, to provide a more responsive feel when scrambling. The toe box is very stiff, meaning that your toes are well-protected from stray boulders. Underfoot, the performance qualities continue to rule the design, with decent cushioning and a good, stiff flex in the sole to make rocky terrain easy on the foot. The lugs on the outsole are 4mm deep, which is ideal for muddy and grassy slopes.

Other shoes have a softer sole flex that some walkers might prefer. The wider toe box of others may benefit some walkers with broad feet, too. Some shoes have slightly more sole bite (the heel breast is not very aggressive on this design), but the real drawback is the weight of 1232g (pair, size 11) making this one of the heaviest shoes we’ve tested.

Upper: Hydrobloc split leather, Cordura, Gore-Tex XCR waterproof lining
Sole: Zamberlan AMS
Sizes: 41-47 (men’s); 36-43 (women’s)
Weight: 1232g (pair, size 11)
Made in: China
Stores in the UK: 74

Verdict: A superb true multi-activity shoe that is equally at home mountain biking, hiking or scrambling in the mountains.
