Scarpa ZG40

These three-season leather boots from Scarpa, although slightly narrow, are well padded and lightweight and reasonably comfortable from the box. The laces pass through leather eyelets, which grip well and therefore help maintain the correct tension across the foot throughout your journey. The narrow fit might stop you tightening them quite as much as you’d like, but they still hold your feet pretty stable with minimum toe banging on descent. There’s plenty of toe and heel protection too. They’re really light, and the midsole is spot on for year-round walking in the UK. They’re also very easy to move in. One slight gripe is that the Vibram sole could work better in mud. It’s great on rock though.

Verdict: An excellent, modern-looking all-rounder that excels in dry conditions higher up the hill, but won’t look out of place on easier paths. Versatile, lightweight and agile.

I bought these on the 29th November and have just taken them on their first outing. A very rainy, wet and muddy 5-6 miles round Hertfordshire. Facing floods on tarmaced country lanes and deeply squelchy mud in fields and muddy lanes, that carried the smooth slip marks of lesser boots, these ZG40s' carried my 18 stone through all this in sure footed dry comfort. Even leaping across flooded drainage gullys cut in field banks, these boots never for a moment gave me cause for concern and gripped so well. On the tarmaced country lanes they where as comfortable here as where grippy on the mud. Love these boots! I'll try and give update as the winter progresses and we plan for bigger things in the Lake District.

The picture looks like the ZG40 GTX (I couldn't find a ZG40 on Scarpa's product list) - does this review refer to that boot?
