Scarpa Manta (2012)

LFTO rating rating is 5

The Scarpa Manta has been the benchmark 4-season boot for longer than I can remember, which has made it the first choice for many hill and mountain walkers to consider when purchasing a dedicated boot for use on snow. The current version, which remains unchanged since 2009, boasts a stitch-free leather upper with a rubber rand, making it extremely durable. There is no waterproof lining, though; however given that there is so little stitching and the leather is very thick, as long as the boot is properly cared for dry feet should be the norm. Underfoot there is an excellent sole with a very deep set of widely spaced lugs that is just the job for crunching into snow. This boot also sits noticeably lower to the ground than others, which gives it a more precise and stable feel. The boot is a little less ideal below the snowline than the older versions of this model, as the sole is less precurved than in the past, and there are lighter boots around, but for snow it is hard to beat and it remains a classic 4-season boot. The Scarpa Manta is available in both a men’s and a women’s version.

The Scarpa Manta is the perfect boot for hill and mountain walking in snow and ice as well as being good for easier glacier travel and mountaineering. It won Trail’s ‘Best in Test’ award.
