Scarpa Enigma XCR

This multi-activity shoe came first in Trail tests in 2006. It is a durable shoe that is so typical of the products that come out of the Italian factory of Scarpa. It’s built to take the knocks and feels just ideal for scrambling. You get a relatively lightweight shoe with a primarily synthetic upper. Inside the upper there is a Gore-Tex XCR waterproof lining. The heel cup is stiff, as is the toe box, so you get good protection on rocky or uneven ground. The sole flex is also very stiff, making it ideal for rocky ground or even for efficient mountain biking. There is good cushioning but also you get a very aggressive outsole with a substantial heel breast to give real bite when the ground turns loose, rubbly or muddy underfoot. Use this shoe on most types of terrain and it will perform well. But the shoe is functional rather than stylish. I also found other shoes were a little more comfortable, so while this is ideal for performance, you’ll probably enjoy wearing others more. The synthetic upper may not be quite as durable as a suede leather and rubber-reinforced options.

Upper: suede and synthetic, Gore-Tex XCR waterproof lining
Sole: Vibram
Sizes: 40-48 (men’s); 36-42 (women’s)

Made in Italy

Verdict: Buy it if you want a waterproof shoe for travel walking, biking, hiking and approaching crags.

Brilliant, very comfortable for a wider foot. Have worn them out unfortunately – but then have worn them everyday since purchase (almost a year ago). Tiny holes in material upper letting water in, but I must admit to not treating them at all. Can’t go wrong with these, value for money!
