Salomon Quest 4D GTX 2009

£130.00

Take a good look at the new Salomon Quest 4D GTX 3-season boot and you’ll recognise the outsole, which is a development of Salomon’s trail running outsole. It gives this boot an excellent ride that takes the wearer close to the ground with a good level of cushioning and stiffness to protect from the pounding. There is a good depth to the lugs too, and generally this sole unit feels great for a varied mix of terrain. The upper is a mix of fabric and suede with a Gore-Tex waterproof lining. The toe box has a good rubber rand for extra durability, and there is just about enough stiffness in that toe area to protect the feet from stray boulders. Use this for general walking at low level, for moorland routes and for easier fell paths, and it should be really good. The boot does all this in a very lightweight and well-priced package, which makes it even better.  But the upper and toe box of the Salomon Quest 4D GTX are a little softer than would be ideal, so it is not the best for tackling the rockiest of terrain. A simpler upper construction may be more durable in the long term too, so again it is best to keep this away from the roughest and rockiest of terrain to maximise durability.

Upper suede leather and textile, Gore-Tex waterproof lining
Sole Salomon Contagrip 4D chassis, EVA cushioning
Sizes 6.5-13.5 (men’s); 3.5-10.5 (women’s)
Weight 1304g (pair, size 11)
Made in China
Stores in the UK 86

Verdict: The Salomon Quest 4D GTX is a very good lightweight walking boot that is ideal for general hill-walking, but for rockier terrain others are better.

I bought these boots three months ago and so far they are the best pair of boots I've owned. They broke in quickly without too much hassle and have coped with everything I've thrown at them marvelously - 10 days in the Grand Canyon in high heat, wet & windy trips through Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, scrambling various routes up Snowdon and much more. My only very minor complaint is that the lining isn't 'quite' as comfortable as my Merrell Outland boots but that pales against the pro's of excellent traction, good support, waterproof/breathability and overall comfort.

recently broke these in on Scafell Pike and even though its very rocky up there, I had no problems and no blisters (good socks though) very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone looking for a lightweight walking boot that can take most 3 season conditions within its stride fit: they are on the narrow side in the heel area.....that means they fit me well :)
