Raichle/Mammut Mtn. Trail GTX 2009

£150.00

There is actually very little between this and the Scarpa Trek, but for the same price the Mountain Trail also gets a Gore-Tex lining. This was a Raichle boot, but the brand has been absorbed by Mammut so you may see it badged as either. The boot is based around a simple nubuck leather upper without lots of stitching to leak or fail over time. The upper is stiff and supportive with a solid toe box to protect the feet. Underfoot you get a very aggressive sole unit, and this has a little more lug depth to it than some for better grip and longer durability. There’s also plenty of stiffness in the sole, so it is ideal for tackling rocky mountain paths, scree and jagged rocks. But you also get a wonderfully easy rolling action and plenty of cushioning, which makes the Mammut Mtn. Trail GTX far comfier than many boots. The price is exceptional for what you get. There is really nothing wrong with these, although if you prefer a boot without a waterproof lining the Scarpa Trek is a better option – and of course that boot may fit your foot shape better too, so I would say try both. There is no rubber toe rand on this boot, which is a consideration for really hardcore users, but not for more casual users.

Upper nubuck leather, Gore-Tex waterproof lining
Sole Vibram Backpacking Rolling II
Sizes 6-13 (men’s); 4-9 (women’s)
Weight 1598g (pair, size 8)
Made in Romania
Stores in the UK no info provided

Verdict: The combination of the price coupled with the performance makes the Raichle / Mammut Mtn Trail GTX a clear winner for 3-season scrambling, backpacking, and walking over hills and mountains.

Mammut took over some of Raichle's products. This Mammut boot is identical to the Raichle boot by the same name. The boots are manufactured in Romania and the sole detaches in a sort time in spite of good care and gentle use. I returned the boots to Mammut USA and they sent me a second pair of identical boots, also made in Romaina. The sole of the second pair detached in exactly the same place and in the same manner as the first pair. Mammut USA offered me yet another pair but I declined and they refunded the purchase price, after I had to insist. I had to spend $150 on shipping to resolve the issue. Mammut USA refused to send the replacement boots to Canada and they had to be sent to a location in the USA and then onwards to Canada. The onward shipping cost $100. Initial return shipping cost $50. Mammut refused to cover any of the shipping costs. I finally had to get past the person who was handling the matter in order to get decent treatment from his superior. I had to fight to get decent service. They wanted me to again pay for shipping but finally agreed to pay for it. No more Mammut for me and never from Romania.

Managed to pick these up in the Cotswold sale at £99. Absolute bargain, even at full price its a great deal. They give your feet fantastic support with a great insole and arch support. I found that this meant they fitted my feet much better compared to boots such as Meindl which were just too wide. They walk very well and hold up brilliantly in wet weather (didn't feel a drop whilst clambering though a small stream). The only draw back would be the lack of rubber toe rand which has already caused a few scuffs on my pair, but I don't see these affecting the integrity of them as they are very stiff. Also Nikwax cleaning gel also appears to make the colour run ever so slightly, so I'm currently looking for alternatives. All in all a great boot with brilliant support and feel, that I can see lasting me many years.

A good quality very comfortable boot, check online prices as they vary quite considerably. Also sizes seem to come out quite small, especially if you have a wide foot. I am a size 10 normally, however a size 11 was right for me with this boot.I also changed the insole provided for a flat profile one (no raised sides) again due to wide feet. The padding on the anle cuffs and around the heel is excellent and being quite a high boot supports the ankle well. The mtn trail is also very warm and "walks" well both on soft and hard ground. Not got round to testing the waterproof qualities yet due to very dry weather but gore-tex linings are usually bullit-proof. All in all a great 3 season boot presuming they last the distance.
