Raichle Mount Trail GTX

£140.00

LFTO rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 3.5

This 3-season boot took 4th place back in TrailApril 06. It benefits from a Gore-Tex waterproof lining to guarantee dry feet, and that higher level of waterproofness makes this ideal for those walking day after day in very wet conditions. Like all the top-end Raichle boots this offers much of what most walkers will want. So you get a very stitchless nubuck leather upper, which means you’ll get years of durability no matter what the terrain throws at you. The upper is virtually a one-piece leather construction, to allow it to fight of the knocks and scrapes from scree. A solid toe box means those stray boulders won’t bruise your toes. The stiff leather upper provides support and protection to the foot, while the ankle cuff is comfortable enough to allow easy walking yet supportive enough to reduce ankle injuries. Underfoot you get a very aggressive Vibram sole unit, and this is partly what sets this apart from some other boots in its class. Good cushioning and sole flex make this boot comfortable on a rocky ridge or a long walk home along a country lane. Add in the fact that these are available for women up to size 9 and everyone should be happy. There is nothing major wrong here and I would definitely try this alongside the other boots in its price range to ensure you get the best fit for your feet. However the boot does not get a full rubber rand. The Raichle Mount Trail XT for £140 has a rubber toe cap. Some walkers may feel that Gore-Tex waterproof lining is unnecessary as there is little stitching to leak. I felt slightly higher from the ground in Raichle boots than in some others. The Raichle did not feel especially spacious in the forefoot, so those with wider feet may prefer  to look elsewhere. If you want to save some cash, then check out the £120 Raichle Mnt Guide GTX.

Upper: Nubuck leather, Gore-Tex waterproof lining
Sole: Vibram MT Traction
Sizes: 6-14 (men’s); 4-9 (women’s)
Trail fit profile: forefoot 2; heel 1; volume 2; length 2
Weight: 1728g (pair, size 11)
Made in Romania
Stores in UK: England 150; Scotland 20; Wales 40; Ireland 5

Verdict: Buy it if you want the one of the best hill and mountain walking boots in the country, like a waterproof lining and don’t think you need a full rubber rand as this is hard to improve on.

I've had my Mountain Trail GTX for about 18 months now and I love them. Comfy from day 1 and loads of space for my wide feet (I can never find ladies' boots to fit...) I would recommend these to anyone for a general all-round 3 season boot. If I was buying a new pair of boots today I'd get these again, but I'd opt for the model with the rand as I do a fair bit of scrambling and want to avoid those big scuffs so that my boots last a bit longer.

I had a pair which did battle on a 100 or so Munros. Great boots, comfy out of the box and as waterproof a boot as I have ever had. Got them reduced too, so I was pleased. Problem was that the sole came apart at the compound grey part. I wasn't so displeased, as it was time for resoling anyway, and replaced them with the standard vibram unit that Scarpa use. Into the second soles, and the nubuck started to split, but with some judicious use of gaffer tape, that wasn't an issue either, given the use they had had. What REALLY got my goat was that they are quite a shallow boot, so after-market insoles didn't fit well, pushing my foot into the tongue. I wrote to Raichle to obtain some OE foot beds. They would not sell me any! I tried various dealers, who despite being helpful, also could not get OE. I am afraid if you add it all up, you aren't surprised I replaced them with Scarpa SL's. Shame really, as both issues would be easy for Raichle to address. Swiss complacency? (I still bought a pair of 60 Degrees that were going cheap though!)

I have had there boots for a year now and they are faultless. Both myself and my husband bought them and neither of us have had the problems others seem to have had. From the very first walk the were extremely comfortable, and just get more comfortable with each walk. They have worn very well over the year and not had a problem with leaking at all. They come highly recommended.

Like a similar reviewer the sole on my pair also delaminated and some of the sole materials are disintegrating. I bought a pair but have only used them occasionally since Sept 2005 possibly 30 days walking. They cannot be repaired. The Raichle distributor has offered me a new pair at full cost £140 (bet they cost them £50) less £1 for every week I have owned them (£108) but why do I want to buy another pair of defective boots. They should acknowledge a manufacturing defect and replace them they are not fit for purpose in my view. An guy in a shop in Hawkshead advised me that it is common knowledge in the industry that there is a problem with the sole on this boot. They are otherwise a nice boot but buy another brand their customer support is dreadful vote with your feet until RRaichle acknowledge there is a problem with this product

I had mine for 18 months when the sole started to come apart, where the coloured sections are. I got in touch with Field and Trek who refunded me and I bought the mountain peak instead which was on sale for £125 (I found the mountain trail boot got damaged around the toes way too easily). I stuck with Raichle because the fit is superb, the boots are excellent and I hope the poor quality of the previous pair was just a glitch.

I've had this boot for a year now and it really is fantastic. For me it was up against the Scarpa Nepal but the Nepal felt clumpy on my size 9 feet. Its only downside is the lack of rubber toe or full rubber rand, which after just 1 trip over sharp edge left the toe with light cuts, however many miles on these cuts and others added since haven't affected its performance. If you can live with the appearence of the cuts, that you will get if walking up mountains, then these are really worth a look. There is an alternative but its like gold dust, the Raichle MT Crest has rubber toe and is an identical boot, but i haven't a pair yet!

RE: Raichle Mount Trail GTX

I took these boots to kilimanjaro. 2 weeks of tough walking and not a rub or a blister. They were pretty much out of the box too. So comfortable it was not a problem putting them on again each morning. However, when i got back to the UK i noticed that part of the sole had lifted in a corner. My supplier in Tavistock replaced them without question, presumably to send them back to Raichle. I have read some other comments about Raichle boots delaminating on the sole and this is a concern but unfortuntately they are without doubt the most comfortable walking boot I have ever had and in that respect I am going to take a chance and see how things go.

RE: Raichle Mount Trail GTX

i purchased a pair of mount trail xt with the exact same sole unit. wore them twice and the sole delaminated and split at the arch support! they were the comfiest boots i have worn, but after numerous emails to raichle with no reply i will be trying another brand! there is definatly a flaw in the sole, steer well clear!!
