Designed specifically for summer alpine technical mountaineering on mixed snow and rock, the Millet Radikal Rock 4-season boot boasts a radical design. The upper is made from various synthetic materials, which give it a unique style, as well as plenty of support and protection from its relatively low weight. The lacing system is equally radical as it has a BOA control knob, which winds in steel cables rather than laces. This technology has been used on a number of boots and appears to work very well indeed. The outsole is a Vibram climbing unit with a climbing zone around the toe, and crampons with a heel clip can be fitted. On the foot the boot feels very comfortable with a narrower toe for climbing and a very stiff feel. It felt quite high-volume, which is fine for fitting with thicker socks, but not ideal for those with low-volume feet. It felt great when climbing though and would be ideal for its intended use in the Alps. But below the snowline others offer a more comfortable rolling action, which would be useful for long walk-ins to the snow in the UK. The price of the Millet Radikal Rock is higher than others, as this is a boot with a specific purpose. But it may not be the best way to spend this amount of cash if you‘ll be walking up British mountains in the snow.
