The Mammut Mt Cliff GTX is ideal for rockier terrain thanks to excellent sole stiffness. You get an excellent outsole too as there is a good, deep set of lugs plus a smooth climbing zone around the toe to help foot placement on small ledges. That nice stiff sole makes this ideal for scrambling. The upper gets a rubber rand for extra protection on rock as well. The upper is comfortable in crampons and the mix of fabric and leather helps keep the weight down to an impressive 1675g (pair, size 11). The ankle cuff is lower than most boots here, which is ideal when scrambling; and certainly some lightweight walkers will like the weight benefit and be prepared to live with the lower ankle cuff to save weight. This is a superb boot for long days of scrambling and mountaineering over scree and rock, particularly if crampons may also be required for an easier snowy approach. But the very low ankle cuff nudges the Mammut Mt Cliff GTX more towards via ferrata, scrambling and climbing rather than walking through snow, because snow and grime will more easily enter the boot over the lower ankle cuff. Also when traversing slopes the lower ankle cuff means you have to work harder to hold an edge, so it is not great in the snow.
